Johnstone was overpriced at $700/semester. Lol.

I can only imagine what these new fancy-pants dorms cost. Kids today are getting soft, and need creature comforts, agreeable grey, and a full kitchen and a king sized bed and private bath, with jacuzzi if available.
Gone are the dorms with sinks you can pee in at will, tin cans, loud music, barf all over the community showers on a Sunday morning. Nope. Showers and bathrooms are private now. No more shower rooms that resemble gas chambers in Nazi Germany. Nope.
I spent 2 years in Johnstone and the remainder of my time in Golden Woods at Clemson. And each day I appreciate my house I live in now more and more. I feel bad for kids who will end up in nicer college dorms than their houses will be when they're 40.

enrollment is way down, tuition is way up. Many kids are realizing that a 4 year college degree is going to get them in major debt when they can go into the trades and make 3x that with 1/2 the debt

It's like the $1 million quintillion asteroid made of diamonds. Only reason it's worth a gazillion dollars is because diamonds are scarce, rare, and in demand. Mine the asteroid, and gain a few million tons of diamonds, and guess what, the asteroid will be worth far less. Everyone who wants a 2 carat diamond will have a 3 carat diamond, and they'll start appearing in Cracker Jack boxes.
Same thing with college degrees. Back in the day they were rare, and meant something because they were rare. It set you at a status above everyone else. You were paid more, etc. FFWD to today, and that degree holds a tiny fraction of the value it once held because EVERYONE HAS ONE.

My grandfather started in the mail room of a major insurance company and retired as a VP of a department which was essentially IT at the time. You can't move up the ladder like that anymore.
Instead of a degree being a ticket to a better job, the better jobs enforce an arbitrary barrier by requiring degrees. In many cases it doesn't matter where you went, what you studied, what your grades were... it's just, "Degree: Yes [ ] No [ ]"
Both my parents have post-graduate degrees. There was always an assumption that my brothers and I would go to college. Nobody ever told me why. I don't think anyone knows.

College doesn't prepare you to join the workforce.

My cousin majored in psychology. I think he got a Master's degree for some reason, too. Now he's a produce supplier for restaurants or some ####. Pretty sure studying Carl Jung and learning about axons and dendrites didn't prepare him for that.

But your bigger private schools and State Us? Looks to be the opposite to me, but what do I know? I'm not connected to a single guidance counselor in Loris school district #69 (who happen to have a really super high rate of kids that attend college) so maybe you're on to something.

is to be a really good football player, a 5-heart walkon with some connection to Dabo's Alabama playing days, or a mediocre-at-best basketball player. Everything else is crapshoot anymore.
