Could Clemson University exist without football?

To me it seems the Universities have more leverage than they realize. The reason all these bullshid CFL UFL blah blah FL leagues fail is they are start-ups with no fan-bases. The Universities have created fan bases, I don't pull for a single player I pull for Clemson as a team so what would happen if all the Universities said enjoy football but enjoy it like the UFL or CFL in your own funded arenas etc.
College football does not exist without the College, or is it the other way around College does not exist without football?

Can a house be a house without a front door? The university is the house. Football is the front door.

Of course it could. If all major colleges did away with all college sports, they would still do well. The Ivy league schools do very well without football.(For all practical purposes, they don't have football. )
TO THINK THAT Clemson couldn't exist without football is silly.Does it help get support for Clemson, yes, but there are far more donor dollars and endowments to the academic side than the athletic side.

Are you going to donate the $200 million or so annually to make up for Tre list spurts revenue?
Are you going to pay a couple of hundred million to maintain an empty Death Valley so it doesn't become an attractive nuisance and cost the university millions in lawsuit damages?
Clemson is wedded to sports, especially football.

That 200 million in sports revenue goes to support the other sports. So you would have to do away them. As for death valley, turn it into a dirt race track for Sat. night racing.
The question was "could Clemson survive w/o football? And if it wanted to be an educational institution, yes. It was not founded on being being a football school. Do I wish to see football at Clemson disappear, of course not. Will it continue to compete at the highest level? Not if it remains in the ACC.

The ACC has nothing to do with Tre NCAA issues being discussed.

Neither does a false dilemma about doing away with sports and Tre money they bring in. Again, the school administrators, BOT, and AD aren't that stupid.

with the idea for one to realize that:
1. a college or univ is the boss.
2. sport’s like FB started around same time as college did (Clemson 1889; FB around 1896-7 and sadly lost to coots 1st time)..but these teams were Club Teams and coaches were professors as was the case at Clemson with Prof from Auburn, I believe.
3. My tic is that the FB programs (<~the tail of the academic animal) have been leading the head of the institution (Administration, Profs & BOT)!
4. To answer your question..YES the institutions of “higher learning” could & would survive w/o FB but the college & other sport programs would suffer irreparably financially since the student body would decrease as well as the # of students wanting to come b/c of the glamour of the FB program..
thus the campus imprint would shrink w/o funding for new facilities growth & needed maintenance, less grant $ for research, less nation news coverage, etc.
Yikes, yes they would survive if they want to go back to the academic imprint size of Elon, PC, Davidson or big boy Furman.
Ha..WAIT, I might want to change my mind!! LOL~
Go TiGERS..Play On & ROCK!!

This is actually incorrect. First off, the bulk of all university funds (private or public) comes from(as stated) gifts or endowments. However, the bulk does go towards athletics at most universities, regardless of division or size. Couple that with the fact that the largest donors are big athletics fans (hence even their academic gifts are influenced by the quality of the sports programs) and the percentage of funds actually generated by athletics is by far the bulk. Now because Clemson is predominately a "football" school, you COULD say that the university relies on the sport to maintain it's current size, status, and attract the best minds to teach and research.
IE - Clemson raised 216,909,099 in gifts and endowments in 2023. $135mm or 62+% came from IPTAY alone. Clemson would close up shop without football. I can tell you for a fact that while I give to both the academic and athletic side of Clemson each year. I would stop if they gave up football.
I'll give you another example at Clemson. In 2023, an Alum couple gave a 2.5mm cornerstone gift that was about 50/50 divided between athletics and other areas of the university. Those alums value their education and the academics of Clemson, but rest assured our football team is what makes them passionate about the University. (yes, I do know them well). There is a reason these folks get recognized at football games and not at other academic functions or graduation at Universities.

It could exist, but it wouldn't want to. The success of the football program has made Clemson a more desirable school for prospective students. It has increased applications and enrollment. It has a significant impact on the local economy and property values.

I certainly would have gone to Clemson even without football, and still would have had a great experience. But football does make it better. Having previously attended two DIII schools before Clemson that effectively had no football, it does make a difference.

I mean, I graduated before ever attending a home football game.

Football is a fabulous marketing tool. The cluelessness of high school seniors cannot be underestimated. With the paw logo and TV presence it builds brand awareness like few things can. Kids often make their college decisions using horrendous reasoning (school colors, seeing attractive students on their tour, etc.), so shallow and aesthetic things matter.
One thing the school has done well is not be crazy like many of the northeastern schools have become. Parents will notice and appreciate that.
Without football CU would need to dig deeper in their bag of tricks to market. Maybe leverage the lake? The location? New majors?
I don’t think obscurity and withering are in the cards without football. It would stink though.

Anyone in doubt should check out CU's annual financial report and supplemental schedules online. Start on page 114 or so. However, the numbers don't show "Goodwill" which is an accounting concept but not applicable in this case.

We were a great university when we couldn't beat anyone except ACC teams...we lost to Jawja, Tennessee, Bama, Auburn and even beat the poultry...but Clemson was a great university even back then...almost student athletes can't make a university great...go figure!
