Conf realignment and the NCAA

Jul 18, 2022, 2:14 PM

Are the conferences 100% independent of the NCAA? Seems like there would be some sort of subordination where the NCAA could put a limit on the schools in a conference or similar actions that would help keep things under control but still allow schools some leeway to do what they want within reason. What's there to stop a conference from being 20 teams or more? What's to keep the ACC from adding west coast teams or the PAC from adding east coast teams? Seems like the origins of the conferences were to keep things somewhat regionalized and also organized by university size, like the ACC vs SoCon. All this realignment is just blowing this out of the water, making it better for TV revenue but also making it harder for fans to get to games and adding expenses to schools for travel (such as when a school doesn't send it's band to a game on the other side of the country - the logistics for major college football are ridiculous). But seems like conferences can pretty much do whatever they want right now.

There was a time when regional football made sense. College football is not a regional game anymore. You have been seeing the trend for the last 40 years. There is tremendous acceleration now that there are (seemingly) no rules anymore. I am just going to sit back awhile and see what happens. I doubt there will be much good come out of it, but maybe it will make the game more interesting to watch on TV...

yes... NCAA ONLY has authority over student athlete

eligibility

no say whatsoever what a school and /or conference does.

now that they can get money there is no way to trace money any longer.

NOw it is about academic eligibility and maybe recruiting violations.

Not exactly true. Haven’t the conferences had to petition the NCAA for rules changes like alignments into divisions (and now the ACC back out of divisions) and being allowed to play a conference championship game? Just as an example.

i dont think so. i dont recall any of these

conferences asking the NCAA anything when realigning.

the NCAA even said during the whole UNC scandal that they only have the authority to question eligibility.
