Expanded playoff discussion (meltdown) over on FGF

The coots are in full meltdown mode about the expanded playoff.
1- conference champs shouldn’t get in (probably bc they will never win a conference title)
2- the lower seeds all lost (umm, the higher seeds got to play at home)
3- humans have too much influence on the rankings, let computers do it. (Well the computers use the dumb preseason rankings that the humans create. How about no rankings until week 4/5)
4- we should expand to 16 games (maybe if you let enough teams in eventually the coots will get their participation trophy)
My favorite part about all this bitching, is that they wouldn’t have gotten in even if they took the top 12 teams, either by committee rankings or by the BCS style computer rankings.

Look at the preseason polls and the 12 team selections and tell me the preseason polls didn't have bearing on the rankings all season.
The concept of a playoff was to establish the best team in NCAA football. That's the goal, being fair or honest wasn't in the paperwork nor listed anywhere in the promises. We got what we wanted relative to the days when the SEC champ got paired with some sacrificial lamb like Oregon or ND. We got a true national champion every year, imo.
However, had the SEC not held such high preseason rankings Scar would might be ranked in the low teens rather than close enough to #12 to whine.

I doubt anyone had Indiana and SMU in their preseason top 10. Those teams accounted for 2 of the 7 at large bids.
I'm fine with the teams the committee chose. If they wanted to take the best teams on paper they could've taken Bama and Ole Miss over Indiana and SMU. They didn't do that.

The committee said that the W/L record was a top priority.

SMU looked good in our game and their record pushed them above us with 3 losses. Indiana wore through their conference schedule. No one thought they didn't belong.
I'm defending the outlay of what the committee promised. I think there is a better way to do this.

Scar plays in the mighty SEC, but we were the best win on their schedule. Their schedule was not nearly as tough as it looked back in the summer.

swapping them in place when one beats the other. They've been doing that since the founding of the SEC/E-SPiN network.

Our memory is way too short.
Does anybody remember how the two teams, and then the 4 teams, were originally picked? Why were computers used in the first place?
"We can't count on human beings. Polls are biased. People are biased. We need an objective way to pick teams. We need to let computers do it. They aren't biased. They use objective data and metrics. You can't trust humans. You have to let computers do it."
We had discussions over which computer ranking systems should be used and how much weight we should give each one. We came up with a system that took out "the human factor."
Now, we want to go back to the system we first demanded, and then hated after the computers didn't pick the teams we thought they should pick.
I have the only perfect system, but nobody will listen to me. The only perfect system is to play the games, through the conference championships, then let bretfsu pick the 12, or 16 or 8 or 32 or however many you want, teams and seed them the way he deems appropriate.
That way, I would never complain about the teams or the seedings. Sounds like a great idea to me. I wonder why nobody else likes it.

I agree with 1, there should be no auto bids for conference champs. Top best 12 period regardless of Conference!

than the SEC and B1G. Maybe two get in.
The other conference leaders knew that, the schools in those conference knew that and would never in a million years adopt such nonsense.

the problem is that "the best teams" is subjective and you never give

lesser conferences a chance to prove it on the field, which is one reason they expanded from 2, to 4, to 12.
If you are "the best team" you aren't losing 3 conference games, no matter how hard your conference is.

If the Coots want to play in the Championship then its simple: Win the SEC Championship like Clemson won the ACC.
