College coaching contracts are the dumbest!

Oct 31, 2022, 7:30 PM

Rewarding coaches for poor performance should never result in these huge “buy outs.” They should be paid on commission like all us other hard working performance earners. Please hire me as your next coach. My press conferences would be.. we sucked today. Please fire me so I can go have fun with my millions. It’s so stupid really.

Agree. With Big Boosters getting more agressively involved,

buyouts do not serve their purpose anymore, anyway. A Buyout costs YOU money to get rid of a bad coach, and on the flip side, it is no obstacle if another school wants your GOOD coach bad enough.

The purpose of the buyout used to be to convince recruits that a school was committed to retaining a head coach for at least 5 years. Now with the transfer portal, commitment no longer matters. If a coach gets fired and players don't like the new coaching hire, they can just hit the transfer portal and move on to a coach they like better. No longer a need to try to convince anyone of anything.

My guess is all of this buyout bs will begin to slowly go away. Schools will begin to catch on.

performance clauses.

Probably would have to give the coach a certain amount of time, but extended sh*t shows...nada nada nada.

Performance clauses = bonuses.

Oct 31, 2022, 8:00 PM

Coaches get bonuses for winning divisions, conferences, bowl games, X number of games in a year, making the playoffs, winning the NC.

They definitely have incentives in their contracts.

Capitalism.

Oct 31, 2022, 7:59 PM

Free Market at its apex.

It's similar to hiring the president of a Fortune 100 company.

The right hire can make you far more money than you spend (Nick Saban, e.g.).

Saban didn't take the Bama job because he had a deep love for Bama and was willing to accept the job whatever the conditions were. He wasn't hired on commission. If he was offered it that way, he would have laughed and walked away.

Re: Capitalism.

Oct 31, 2022, 8:05 PM

You sir do not know if he would have walked away or not. When hired I believe he was making $5M per year. Had he been offered $1M guaranteed and $500K per win he may have jumped on it. As for buyout, the deal should $500K times the number of wins over the most recent 12 games. If fired the coach gets paid and if the coach jumps ship the school gets paid. It’s not rocket science

The contracts help recruiting

Oct 31, 2022, 8:03 PM

Most recruits probably don't want to commit to a school with a coach with a one year contract. The transfer portal and NIL may have changed this some but recruits are invested in their initial school and hope to leave a legacy.

Everyone wants to make a great hire

Oct 31, 2022, 8:37 PM

Everyone wants to make a great hire with a coach that has a great resume.

Those coaches know their market value.

This is how capitalism works.

That is the purpose of a contract. The coach is rewarded a stupid amount if he does good and a stupid amount if he does not. Would you put your families future in the hands of spoiled 18-20 year olds if you did not have a contract? A hard no.
