Coaching experience

31

Sep 7, 2023, 2:12 PM

I was doing some research on my own yesterday when I saw someone posted about coaching experience on the board. Here is what I found out. I went back to the 2016 title team, which had nine full-time, on the field coaches. Those nine coaches (not Swinney) had 206 total years as full-time college or NFL assistants or head coaches. That was 99 on defense and 107 on offense. Of course, Robbie Caldwell and Dan Brooks skewed those numbers a little bit.

Monday night's coaching staff, with 10 coaches, combined for 57 total years. That is 38 on defense and 19 on offense. I might be off a year here or there, but that is what I came up with.

The coaching staff may not be as a good as it once was, but they're friends and family. They fit the culture, in the end that's all that matters.

And that is why Kirby has left us in the dust.
On offense and special teams, we have NEVER under Dabo been a good coached team. We simply out talented our opponents and relied an the top Defense in the country to fill the Holes.

I don't want to rub salt, but If T.L. had played in Kirbys system, he would have won 2 Heismans.

Well, we had almost no coaching turnover for so long. Then because of our success some guys got good opportunities. Dabo then made some hires that are real head scratchers. I don't have issue with hiring guys like Spiller that have played in the NFL, they know what it takes. But we made a "spreadsheet guy analyst" the DC/LB coach and a high school coach the "passing game coordinator". It's almost unbelievable that he would do that.

I dont see how any person in their right mind can blame

2
2

Sep 7, 2023, 2:44 PM

the loss on offense or defense, per se. And as such, blaming it on the coaching of either side seems a bit obtuse (not saying that’s what Hood intended).

We lost because of turnovers and missed tackles. Basic football.

No grand conspiracy. No 30 for 30. No expose on the embattled so-and-so’s who’ve lost a metaphorical step or two. No drug rehab; no girlfriends leading someone astray; no internal political battles.

And especially no “Duke was the better team”.

I struggle to understand with good reason why people can’t just accept that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because it simply isnt so, thats why

7

Sep 7, 2023, 3:10 PM

The offense was plain, vanilla, predictable, and misfiring. Just like last year. The defense was soft, bad tackling, bad angles, just like last year.

Duke has 2 blue chip players. Clemson has 56. Duke has the 60th ranked roster in college football. Clemson has the 5th ranked roster.

By the way, you may not know this, but, fundamentals.....they are taught by coaches. Worked on in practices that are run by coaches.

Clemson lost because Duke is the better team is a laughable explanation as to what happened Monday night and for that matter, the past 2+ seasons.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

430+ yards, 75 more than Duke, great balance with 200+

Sep 7, 2023, 8:18 PM

running and passing, 27 1st Downs, 4 trips into the Red Zone (3 on long drives), 63% passing completion (though only 5 yds/Att), only 1 3-and-out, and over 33 minutes of TOP.

Because everyone else here understands that this thread isn’t about the loss of one game, but how a lack of staff coaching experience and questionable promotions/hires are just a few of the factors that help explain the decline of the program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can you remove the TL16 years?

3

Sep 7, 2023, 3:01 PM

TL16 would have won 3 National Championships on an Alabama or Georgia or Ohio State team. He carried the coaches that failed him. Even the NFL people talked about how they had to undo his Clemson years. And it took the professionals 1.5 seasons to do so.

Thanks for the quantitative data, @DavidHood. My eyes told me Monday we look like a poorly coached team… the data shows our coaching staff lacks experience to be successful. So… how did Clemson get here and why did the Clemson Athletics community allow it? Yikes.

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simple, because Dabo clearly has carte blanche to do whatever he wants.

1

Sep 7, 2023, 3:40 PM

And based on TNet posts over the years, most of our fans have been fine with that. They didn’t want anyone to question Dabo, not even his boss, because Dabo knows best.

That’s a potentially dangerous scenario, and I feel we are seeing it play out right before our eyes.

I’ve asked before: who does Dabo have in his life besides Kathleen to tell him no? Anyone on the coaching staff or in Clemson’s athletic department? Even the most brilliant leaders need people who will set them straight and say no when warranted.

Woody was Dabo's position coach at Alabama. Woody was also on Ford's staff at Clemson in the 80s. After Alabama, he also coached with Fulmer at Tennessee before his return to Clemson in 2009.

I watched the Cowboys under Landry go this path.

He was an untouchable relic. The game had passed him by. The program reflected his mantra -- always searching for moral victories in the wake of actual losses.

Then Jones showed up and won three titles playing the game as it had to be played.

Now he's a relic. The cycle repeats.

Except in Clemson's case, its a true nightmare scenario because the team cant be sold to a new owner who cleans house and begin again. Nope ... Dabo will have to remove himself. Aint nobody got the samd to fire him. Yikes.

Thanks David. Good info. When we say the team Monday night looked like a Tommy Bowden team, that translates into "Poorly Coached" in the details and the fundamentals of the game. Your data backs that up.

Those staffs were absolutely amazing. Outside of Mike Reed and G Riley, I can't say I am overly impressed with the resume, recruiting, or development of any other assistants. I'm sure a few of the others are solid but for the most part they just aren't cutting it. I can't believe what Dabo did with the coordinator hires. When he backed up his decisions I trusted him but at this point it seems both may be terminated in the first few years. I never could have imagined being here so quickly after Dabos second natty. The FSU game is going to be a huge look into how the rest of the season will pan out. Not confident.
