about the difference between college and the NFL.
Saban most notable example. Spurrier next. list also includes Petrino, Dennis Erickson and Butch Davis. I think Dabo is too wise and too self aware to think his skill in developing young men would easily translate to dealing with the egos and prima donnas in the NFL.

As far as Dabo eventually returning to Alabama: I have noticed through the years that when a coach becomes successful at a school, that when their alma mater comes calling, they think that if they were so successful at another school that they will be even more successful at their alma mater. But most often, they fail when they return to their old school. When the chemistry is right with a coach and school, they should have enough sense to stay there.
When a Bama grad called into the Paul Finebaum Show not long ago, he asked Paul did he think that the logical choice for replacing Saban when he finally retired, would be Dabo Swinney. His answer, "Yes I think that he would be the most logical choice. BUT, Alabama had better have a second choice lined up because Dabo will stay at Clemson."

If Dabo were to leave for Bama, it would probably be to replace the coach that replaces Saban. I don't think he would want to be the rebound coach. If he did leave for the NFL, the one thing that would make him successful there would be his ability to hire the right coordinators for the job.

I'd have to say I agree with Paul on this one. Dabo has built a monster at Clemson. Something that has never happened at this small school. He knows he'd be successful anywhere he went, but going to Bama he'd be competing against both the Bear and Satan and he would rather compete against opposing teams. I would take years for him to finally step out of the shadows of either of those.

Give Dabo some credit , he has better sense than to jump in that fire . Now if years from now and they had fallen on hard times like the coots and needed rebuilding , He might consider leaving Clemson , but he has found a real home here and its all His . He built that .

His ability in finding great assistants, and in the Xs & Os , would translate to the NFL. However, his approach to player personel would not. Very few head coaches get complete control over personel decisions, gm's & owners play a large roll. With todays pros, I don't see them buying into Dabo's style either.
Plus I feel he gets just as much satisfaction out of helping young men reach their potential off the field. He knows he would miss that. But, "Never say never."
