CLEMSON vs Army

My neighborhood is mostly snowbirds who have moved here to share our great weather and our way of life. Some are good folks (jury still out on the couple from Cornell).
I fly the TIGER flag at my mailbox and on my dock. Some here have fun flying the team of their choice. Around me are Michigan, Iowa, Boise State, and Texas flags. Used to be a UGA fan here, but he moved and sold his house to a fan of Army (West Point grad).
I suspect most teams would like to play Navy, Army, Air Force. That would fill most stadiums. I looked it up and our TIGERS played Army in 1937. We lost 21-6.
At one time CLEMSON was a military school. When I got there in in 1964 is was "kinda" Military. ALL students had their heads shaved, all were assigned a M-1 rifle. All were required to take two years of ROTC. CLEMSON has a strong military tradition. How many still get a thrill when the Jets fly over the game on Military Appreciation Day? CLEMSON has many Military Heroes.

got to CU at the same time.wasn't crazy about getting my head shaved, but wouldn't trade the comraderie it created amongst the rats.it led to some life-long friendships.that experience during our 1st semester is definitely one of the reasons that there's something special in those hills.also explains why some, who weren't there, can't appreciate the loyalty we have toward our alma mater.

That's one thing I've liked when we've played TA&M - our similar military histories.
Only two schools commissioned more officers into the Army during WW2 - West Point, TA&M and Clemson A&M (at the time). Wish we could get West Point in here one year for Military Appreciation Day. That'd be fun!

Not sure who started the Clemson A&M

The name of the college was originally Clemson College and was changed to Clemson University in 1964. I have seen many items with Clemson A&M on it or Clemson Agricultural College. However, Clemson has only had two official names Clemson College and Clemson University. A bit of trivia, above the doorway to the now Main Hall (Tillman Hall) it shows "Clemson College..." That stands for Clemson College of South Carolina.

Clemson was a Military College. That is true. I had a Clemson A&M pendant on my wall as a teen. Maybe that was not the official name, but it was known as that. It was while I was there we went from calling ourselves a "college" to "university". It would be cool these days if we had kept the name "College". That would freak out the big universities when we keep kicking their a@@,

In the late 80s I used lab equipment that had Clemson A&M on it in electrical engineering labs.
Not sure how official that made it, but it was on inventory tags on lab equipment.

One of my favorite memories involving Army was around 1957-1959. When Clemson was out of town or something that kept my dad and his brothers from going to see the tigers, they would go see usuck. Here in Columbia as a 7-9 year old, loved going with them to games. Gamecocks were playing Army and they talked all the way to the stadium about this “lonesome” end named Carpenter. I think that’s the only player I watched all day. He never went into the huddle, mostly lining up to the wide side of the field. DBs would forget about him occasionally. It must have driven defenses crazy at that time. It was still a very run heavy college game then. Until Bellino and Staubach came along a few years later, that was my biggest military school memory.
