Clemson verses NC State rewatch game observations

DJ - missed a couple of throws, one to a wide-open Collins high, then another by inches to a streaking Collins for a potential TD. He ran the ball well and made great decisions all night, though. I am continuing to be impressed with DJ.
Offensive line- again, the interior struggled even against a 3-man front finding LBs at the second level to put a hat on running plans. In pass defense, they really blocked well outside of a couple of plays.
Running backs - Played really well; ship abandoned his blocking assignments, I think I few too many times. It was probably a decision they taught him to make. This is a chemistry thing between him and DJ that improved even during the game and should continue the rest of the season.
Williams is our best WR, period. EJ is all but disappearing.
Streeter is throwing in wrinkles, calling passing plays to the middle of the field, exploiting soft zone coverage, doing a lot of good things, and continuing to involve the TE. It's hard to argue with his success. A lot of early drives were aided by penalties, just to note.
The defensive line played really well. KJ is the man. Tyler is playing well. Murphy played well but didn't go 100% after the QB, thinking Simpson would get him on a critical third-down scramble, you can't have that.
I think the young pups in the secondary are starting to immerge, and Davis is probably cycling out. Through several games, I have noticed that Davis simply lacks the speed and reaction time to be a good corner. I hoped it was something else, but I am afraid it's simply a lack of talent. Mickens is the best secondary player we have though he missed on a play covering over the top.
The LBs are the strength of this team. Carter might be a HOF NFL LB someday. Simpson played well but maybe not his best game.
Punter is a concern. Potter missed one, but still, man, he's on of our best overall players on the team.

On the missed FG by Potter it looked like the hold was a bit weird. The laces were out and when the holder went to fix it the ball looked like it slipped a bit and was a little sideways.

I’m not sure I’ve ever had so much confidence in a Clemson kicker hitting from 45+ yards as I do with Potter.

Mike Williams would have “laid out” on that slight…

…overthrow from DJ to Collins.
I’m not pouncing on Collins (he is probably Clemson’s best receiver at this time, I know some will think it is Antonio W), but even besides Mike W, I think Tee, Martavis B, and probably Sammy (he was fast enough to probably just speed up and get that ball without laying out), all would probably have laid out to make that catch.

I agree 100% some other WR's make that play.
Not piling on Collins; but I needed to see him lay out for that one. Make the catch 1st; then worry about it being pretty and yac yards after.
Sometimes the QB is pressured and has to pass it before he's ready; that's when a talented WR "makes the QB right"!
Make the QB look better than they are - is what pass catchers can do. Offensive players period can make the OC look good by "MAKING A PLAY".
What's the definition of "making plays"?

BC had a full glove on the ball on that pass…

…and he was essentially stretching enough to make sure he would not fall down.
If BC wants to really wants to be known for “Bo Time”, that catch has to be made, i.e., make a play.

They call them “50/50” balls for a reason. It is not a high percentage play. He just put a little too much mustard on it. Otherwise, that’s a touchdown. They’ll get it again before the year’s out.

50/50 balls are in reference to one-on-one tight coverage and betting that your WR will go up and get it. Collins had the DB beat on that play. Every WR coach I’ve ever met will tell you, if it touches your hands, you should catch it.

Beaux has lots of big catches & lots of big drops

this year. That ball DJ threw to him was definitely catchable and knowing Dabo's standard, he will definitely call that a drop. Bottom line is Beaux needs to get more consistent with his hands to be the WR we know he can be.

As far as DJ’s throws, the one to Collins should have been caught.

Dabo mentioned Davis in the post game interview.

He was asked about the lack of PT for Davis. He responded professionally, but very clearly that Davis wasn't playing because he wasn't playing well enough. He implied very strongly that his work ethic was way below acceptable. I think his exact words were, "It's a performance game" or something very close.
Davis could be in the Love Shack.

First, love all you fellas x & o discussion. Great analysis.
I would add one thing imo that Streeter and DJ need to improve on, or get rid of entirely - that WR screen. One of two things happen and neither or good imo. The WR's miss the blocking assignments and DJ takes too long to deliver it. Aka telegraphed.
DJ got very fortunate (when game was still in balance) the one yard pass to Allen. We're extremely lucky that wasn't a pick 6. DJ has to eat it there, throw it away, scramble or something. May Allen needed to break inside, or take off deep.
Ngata - little dissapointed he and DJ haven't developed the chemistry or something. Had a nice 21 yarder and the one (screen) that lost 2 I think out of 4 or 5 targets.
DJ and Streeter - DJ naked boot, great. DJ goal line carry, good. But the designed QB runs should go. If protection breaks down, fine, DJ is improving. But the QB draw, not so much. I would love to see them fake that and let DJ dump it over the middle or have ship slip screen from it. Other concern is DJ hanging onto the ball in heavy traffic.
More Mafah. He doesn't need much blocking to get 4 yards... Which isn't bad on first down. If you're pounding the middle, Mafah, not Ship. Bounce Ship outside, run him on a naked toss sweep out of motion.
Defense - A+ with the injuries. More Venables. He has instinct. Hopefully Pride continues to see the field. If so, he'll be ready in November.

Can’t get rid of the QB runs. It makes the safeties and LBs pause on pass plays. No matter how ineffective they look at times, they have to be done for this offense to run the way it’s suppose to.

I agree with everything you said, especially about the WR screens.
I was also a little annoyed with the running plays on 2 and forever but looking bad at the game; I think maybe we were trying to balance the pass with the run calls since he was heavy on pass plays on second down in the first half.

The screens help set up the downfield throws and slow blitzes.
The pass that would have been a touchdown if Collins had caught it was from a screen formation.

Punting is a MAJOR concern...

and has been for years !!!
Spiers had one decent year out of the five he started, otherwise, he struggled with consistency. I was ready for Spiers to move-on but the latest iteration of Clemson's punter does not appear to be an improvement.

Overall an effective game plan but I'd love to see more tempo.
