Clemson Football - Adapting and Overcoming

Oct 24, 2022, 8:56 AM

I was thinking about this team and what it's been through the last several years, and I don't know that there's any one team that has been through the adversity that Clemson has been through and has come through it all so well.

We've had adversity over the years - the mess with Kelly Bryant, Bresee losing his sister right after she came to speak to and spend time with the team, the upheaval of last year, the uncertainty around DJ, injuries after injuries to key players and even entire position groups, losing both coordinators in the same year, and there's probably more that I'm forgetting.

And every year it's the same old story - they play an ACC schedule, they almost got beat by _______, they struggled against _________ and needed a 4th quarter comeback. They don't have the star players. There's always some excuse the national media finds to downplay what these teams have accomplished. Every. Year. Even last year - when they were declaring the Clemson years to be over - we still fought hard and finished very strong.

We've not had one year that was smooth sailing. We had the Pitt loss. The Syracuse loss. The near-losses to Syracuse, NC State, Syracuse, Wake Forest, etc. Well - the media calls them near-losses. I call them determined wins. It's all about the spin, right?

Dabo is doing what a lot of coaches can't do. He's coaching them physically, yes, but he's coaching their mentality. Their attitude. Their principles. I am impressed every year when I give up on them in games like we had Saturday how these guys don't give up on themselves, rally around each other, persevere and overcome.

Like it's been said, we ain't Ohio State or Alabama or Michigan, rolling over mediocre competition. We're slogging it out against good teams, ranked teams (then and now!), and finding ways each week to come away with the W. They're making it happen. It isn't happening "for" them every week. It's a fight. But they make it happen. I'm looking forward to more great things from this team this year and this program in coming years.

No team or program has the character of Clemson football. None. Period.
