Clemson Dropped The Swim Team Because !!!!
Aug 9, 2012, 3:40 PM
|
|
they did not want to build a 50M pool!!! That was f'ing ridiculous. My neighborhood pool has a 50M and a 25M, and we are a neighborhood swim club !!! Dues, 550 a year. Granted, this might be "Germans", but if the now defunct AD made that decision, he should have "retired" several years a go!!! You DO NOT want "Football Morons" to be in charge of the entire Athletic Program... there once was a school named Penn State......
NOTE: the "M" after 50 in paragraph above refers to meters (a metric system measurement, roughly equivalant to a yard), NOT MILLIONs, as some TigerNet! fans thought ...

50m for a pool for a team that does not make money and isnt even on the radar of its own schools fans is too much.

Most Sports DO NOT make money for the school
Aug 9, 2012, 3:54 PM
|

Football is the money maker, HOWEVER, even Football is a big money LOSER at a lot of schools. My view is that there should be a wide variety of sport for all interests... because being known, for example, in "Olympic Sports" is great advertisments for the school, brings in donations from well-heeled supporters of the so called "alternative" Sports. I hope the next AD has a clue about demographic profiles.... how the "Olympic Sport" fan has a much higher median income then the average football fan (I love football too, but its true). The bottom line is, who is going to donate to the school?

In the ACC swimming doesn't make as much sense as

women's golf. We already have to maintain the course and the ACC isn't much of a swimming conference.
A public school Clemson's size cannot afford all sports. I think it made sense even though it was sad.

All the schools in the ACC offer swimming !!!

Miami offers diving only, soon to be followed by Clemson, UMD is canceling Swim Team, BUT a big fight is going on now (the whole Athletic program is a mess)
Again, you gotta offer a wide variety of sports to attract a wide variety of interest...
The Schools
North Carolina 6-1 7-2 NC State 6-2 9-2 Virginia 3-1 5-3 Virginia Tech 4-2 8-3 Clemson 3-2 6-3 Florida State 2-2 7-3 Duke 1-6 4-7 Boston College 0-0 15-2 Maryland 0-3 4-4 Georgia Tech 0-5 2-9 Miami competes in diving only

$20,000,000

I doubt your neighborhood pool cost $20,000,000. That's the number the swim program told the AD they would need to build a "proper" facility. The AD made a wise business decision.

From what I've been told, a number of swimming alumni got together and agreed to pay for either all or at least a large portion of the improved facility. The program was sacked anyway.

More like "football, you bet" mentality
Original quote (something about competiveness, more like your not going to be competive if you don't have a pool)
"This was a difficult decision. It comes as a result of a long review of Clemson's sport offerings in light of our mission to offer sports in which we have the best opportunities to be competitive," said Phillips. "Clemson's all sports program approach requires review of facilities, coaching, and student-athlete recruitment opportunities for all sport offerings. Our job is to focus on areas where we have the necessary underpinnings to be successful."
"While facilities are important in every sport, having an Olympic size pool has become most important in swimming. We have made a decision not to build a 50-meter pool, and thus feel our program is in a state where it will be very difficult to compete at the highest level in the ACC and nationally."

On the swimming decision, if we used the reasoning that swimming doesn't make money so we shouldn't build a pool, we would not have any women's sports. I also can't believe we are delaying baseball locker room renovations while we wait to raise just $1M. Spend that money and get started rather than continiung to be at a recruiting disadvantage. It ain't rocket science.

Granted, the Swim Team WANTED an olympic class pool, but they should have gotten what met the requirements. Its a concrete hole, 50M in length, put a bubble with a heater on it in the winter... good enough. ALSO, Clemson student could use it, the community could use it (pay fees).... it would have paid for itself.

If the alumni said they'd pay for it, it doesn't cost the AD any more than it already cost. Actually it would likely save money, as the old pool is in bad condition and is closed for maintenance more often than it is open.
