It’s time to quit making excuses for CBB

Feb 12, 2022, 10:41 AM

We have the facts of 12 years in front of us. Yet have people saying what if we hire a coach who is worse than CBB.
If you keep doing the same thing and expect different results it is called…….
You finish the sentence.

Clemson does not care about basketball

Feb 12, 2022, 10:48 AM

CBB runs a clean program and has an outside chance every year of making the NCAA Tournament. He keeps his players out of trouble. And, that's pretty much where Clemson has set the bar for basketball. If Clemson wanted to compete for championships, they'd go pay a good coach and give him the resources to succeed.

This is the only logical conclusion.

Our goal should be top 25 every year. If not that then be one of 66,yes 66, to make the tourney.

Brad seemed like a good hire at the time, in that mold of

up-and-comer in the profession. This is the same mold I would want us to focus on this next time around also when it comes to a new hire. I don't find anything wrong with that initial approach.

Our problem with Brad though, why this has drug on for so long and 12 years later we're still treading water, has been all about timing. After his successful first season, NCAA appearance, Jerai Grant taking off, and prospects for growth, we offered up more to secure him for longer. So when things started to turn south quickly, it was just too expensive to get out of it. Then, on the hot seat and with an ultimatum to step it up or step on it, we stepped it up with a big NIT run and it looked like we'd made the turn. Another extension, enhanced buyout, etc. Then back to mediocre afterwards. With Littlejohn renovations slated, we kind of had to give Brad a chance at that point to leverage that. Lo and behold, a Sweet 16 run. Salary increase, extension, buyout. Then back to normal.

This brings us to last season. On the hot seat again. Boom. NCAA tourney appearance though one and done, along with that first round ACC loss. But this time, the admin didn't double down and get deeper in the long term end as we had numerous times in the past. This time they added only one year and actually reduced the buyout some, which kind of made this season another hot seat year by default.

My point is that Clemson DOES care about basketball. The AD IS aware that what we're experiencing now does not align with what our long term goals in the sport should be or last year's deal wouldn't have transpired like it did. Neff certainly isn't going to negative talk a coach during a season, so the only stock I put into recent comments there centers around him accentuating the positive, and skillfully skipping over the rest.

The reality of basketball in a rural setting like Clemson. CJ Spiller made all the difference in football and until we get that guy in basketball, it does not matter who the coach is. The administration knows this.

That is a point. But Clemson/Greenvile/Anderson is a lot more attractive than Blacksburg/Roanoke. And tech seems to do as well as and often better than we do.

First off I am not making excuses. Secondly, what person in his right mind would make comment(s) about hiring a coach who is worse than CBB ?
However I will go on record as saying the one man we do not need hire is a :big name coach who has a lot of garbage, like Bruce Pearl or Rick Pitino or a Mark Few, who is not familiar with where to recruit in the South
or another Oliver Purnell who thinks you can get "athletes" who can run up and down the court all night ,but who are not "basketball" players who can both offense or defense.
I have said with in the last couple of days the one man I think we should at least send a feeler out to is Greg Bucker. He is young, played at Clemson, so he knows the culture, he is from Kentucky so he should have some knowledge of where to recruit, and he should have more of a working knowledge of the X's and O's on how to run the court.
So to finish your sentence it's called "we don't care about basketball".

CBB is 5-9 in the ACC Tournament and has never won a tourney game after Thursday. That’s the main problem I have with the last 12 years. He can’t even rise above the dregs of the ACC in March.

It’s ashamed you are too stupid to see that changing the HC is the thing done over and over yet you are advocating for it and expecting results. What a dufus
