Question about the Esso Club

Jul 17, 2018, 8:42 AM

Especially for students or recent grads. I attended Clemson from 79 - 83. I was aware of the Esso Club, but it wasn't a "thing" among students. I don't remember anyone talking about it or going there, except I think my roommate may have gone there to get boiled peanuts. So my question is do students / recent grads love the Esso Club or is it just something that visiting ESPN announcers love to talk about? I'm not dissing the Esso Club at all. I've just been re-watching some games from last year and often note that TV announcers in Clemson for the game talk about like it's the center of the Clemson Nation universe. And that just wasn't the case when I was in school.

I’ve never been inside but believe they’ve cleaned up their act (interior) over the years..but i have & will again go stand outside with 200 fans drinking a cold one listening to a terrible sounding hick band..

beginning with the GaSouthern game since bringing two of their grads up for game to show off tigertown.

It's funny how the Esso Club evolved. I was there 81-85 and didn't step foot in it either. It was a local's spot where a few ol guys gathered during the week to drink a few cans of beer. A few more people would go there during gamedays that didn't have tickets. But nothing like it is today. I like what it is today but is it really a big hit with the students today? Maybe. I don't know.

I was there 87-91 and never went either. I do remember word getting around campus one day that Brent Musberger and Ara Parsegian (sp?) were there prior to a game, and I know Brent always liked it and talked it up, so maybe that began the myth/popularity of the Esso Club?

In 1972 our Monday night tradition was stop by Hardees for 2 burgers, fries, Apple pie and drink for $1.04. Then go to the ESSO Club for a case and 2 bags of Doritos to take to a friend's room in Lever to watch MNF with Frank, Howard and Dandy Don!

I think when they started having the outside events and bands was when it became the In Thing. I do remember hearing a band playing that caught my ear and walked over from Lot 2 to discover the Blue Dogs, a teally good band from Charleston that played there often.

Class of 85 and 88.

In fact, I rarely went there as a student other than to get some BBQ on game day because the lines at Hardees or the Canteen were so long.

When I was a student, Tiger Town Tavern, College Station Pub, the Corporation, and Bolwinkles (Crazy Zacks) were my typical evening entertainment destinations.

The Esso has changed a lot over the years. Until sometime in the the early 80's, it was still an operating gas station with a BBQ joint next door. During that time, the place fell into a state of disrepair. It was around this same time that the owners stopped operating it as a gas station and turned it into a bar.

It probably wasn't until sometime in the late 80's that the Esso Club (formerly the Esso Service Station) became a more popular spot for students and fans on game day.

Re: Question about the Esso Club

Jul 17, 2018, 9:33 AM

As an undergrad (71-75) most students went to the Red Carpet, Study Hall, Grocery (one year), and Lester's - the Esso Club had more of a locals following and good ole boys bar. While in grad school (75-78) faculty (particularly College of Ag) and others associated with athletics (a coach every now and then) increased attendance in the late 70s and lots of faculty started going there in the 80s. The place changed owners and added Just Barbecue and lots more people started going.

Brent Musberger talking about it on national TV was the greatest marketing tool they could have ever had.

On game day the Esso Club is crowded inside and out; however, if you can get a table inside, the chow for lunch is pretty good. Several TV's inside the place so you can keep up with the games across the country. Can watch the coots, dawgs, billygoats, and buck nuts get a beating each week :)

Esso Club tradition from an Old Timer

Jul 17, 2018, 9:58 AM

I grew up in Clemson ... lived there 43 years and graduated in 1973 ... worked there 16 years ... left in 1998.

Honestly, when I lived there, I never went to the Esso Club bar at all.

I bought some groceries there a couple of times when it was more of a gas station/convenience store than a bar (late 60s to early 70s) but I never had a beer there. I ate at “Just BBQ” when it was in the building, but not the bar.

IMHO the Esso Club that people know today didn’t arrive until football took off in the mid 70s ... sort of like “Mr. Knickerbocker”.

The success of the football program, the growth in popularity, and the size of the crowds and mostly the proximity to the stadium drove the development of Esso Club as an “in” place to go.

It helped that Brent Musberger touted it on national TV games in Clemson.

But, as an old time Clemson resident, employee and alum, I have to admit that it was never a “thing” for me.

I actually got gas at the Esso Club when it still had gas back in like 79 or 80, and I bought beer there too on my mom's Exxon credit card. It was listed as misc. When she got the bill, I was told to never buy "misc" again, or she would take away the credit card.

Then I went there once in like the summer of 87 for some odd reason, but that was about it. It was too far from downtown.

However, now I go quite a bit during football season! It's the closest bar and great to hit at half time.

I was at CU from 79-82 and 84-87.

Student in'76-'80. Not a great place to go back then. Mostly locals drinking PBR cans. Our "go-to" bars then were "The Bookstore", TTT, and Sloan Street Tap Room. Probably mid-80s Esso Club was "renovated" to include more tables and bathroom upgrades. It became the place to be for gameday. I also enjoy going for lunch now and their meat and three. They have had some good bands there also thru the years.

Most people don't know this or have forgotten, but about 8-10 years ago, my friends and I stop by there on a Friday night before the spring football game that year. It was pretty cool, probably in the upper 40s or so. There were about 10 people outside listening to the band. I told my friends that this band is pretty good and I really enjoyed their music that night. I wrote down their name and found their website the next day. Turns out it was the "Zac Brown Band". Think they have done pretty well since then!!

Mid 90's we had a lot of fun there as students.
Canned beer only (and one or two taps).

Things changed forever when the liquor license was obtained....probably late 90's. That led to a different clientele.

Re: Question about the Esso Club

Jul 19, 2018, 3:55 PM

I was mid-90s as well, and we'd hit the Esso pretty often. Cheap beer.

Regularly had live music. They would allow some of the clubs I was involved in to organize a group of bands to come in once or twice a year and we could keep the $5 cover charge (after paying the bands). We would also serve as ID check and it was always fun to see underclassmen you knew come in with their awful fake IDs.

Other nights you would stop by there and it would be completely dead with only a handful of old folks hanging around. Certainly better if you knew your friends were going to be there.

Thursday afternoons a few of us would go and enjoy some PBR with a few of our professors. Always interesting getting to know professors outside of the classroom.

Thanks everyone for the many responses. Based on these, I think my thoughts about the Esso club were correct. It sounds like while it's a nice place to have a beer and some grub, that Brent Musburger and other TV people think it's a bigger deal than it really is. I attended Clemson from 79 - 83 and have also attended many, many games since then and I have never set foot in the place.

Grew up in Clemson, but attended between '73 and '77. Went there all the time to get gas, beer, etc. I had my Dad's Exxon card and it was a combo store, station, and bar. They had beer on tap so cold it would get ice crystals in the head.

The bar was made from the old wood bleacher seats from Death Valley and still had the numbers. They had a wheel on the wall with the numbers and when they spun it, if your beer was on the number, you got a free beer. I remember getting a free cold one there one time.

I did not go to the bar alot, but I did once or twice.

I attended CU from 2007-2012. I was part of a Bioengineering research group - we'd go to Esso every Wednesday for their "meat and three" deal (meal with 1 meat and 3 sides). It was generally pretty slow during the day throughout the week, but it's become more of a hangout spot for gamedays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jul 17, 2018, 1:29 PM

There were two primary attractions:
1) No one went there
2) Live music (my now brother in law played there often)

The menu then was just beer, hoop cheese and saltines, and barbecue from Just Barbecue next door.

It is a very different place now...extended menu, no longer off the radar. I prefer it now for a different reason; my age group has discovered it, so if I want to reconnect with classmates, it is the go to place.

The bars downtown have changed significantly, too, and not in a good way. Back in the day, I was about 50% Gameroom, 20% Tiger Town, 20% Esso, and 10% others (Barrell, Nick's Sloan St). But trust me, the 10% piece was still significant!

You’re correct. I spent most of my youth in Clemson (‘78ish - ‘92ish), and Quattlebaum’s “Just Barbeque” (shared the same building) had far more patrons on a day-to-day basis. I can’t speak to earlier times, but recent media exposure has made the Esso Club more popular than it ever was in Coach Ford’s era.

My haunts were the original Study Hall (big old great greasy pepperoni pizzas and huge cold pitchers of beer with the legal drinking age 18, life was grand!), and the old Red Carpet Lounge, which (I think) is now Tiger Town Tavern.

I was there 77-81 and I have been in it. But it's wasn't the "hot" spot for sure, with all the clubs that were in town at that time. Most places were set up for dancing. It was there when my father was at Clemson as well, working gas station. But you could get beer. It has evolved over the years. They saw where they could be and went for it.
