CFP and other random thoughts

Nov 1, 2022, 11:26 AM

CFP Format - I was not a fan of expansion, but now in favor of 12 team format...anything that takes influence away from "pundits" and other individual voters. The more the playing field decides the champion, the better.

SEC-ACC - I generally think the SEC is the better conference, but not to the level the media would have you believe. More than the quality of play, it's the atmosphere/passion that sets the SEC apart. Overall, the ACC doesn't compare and that is where we ultimately lose the revenue battle.

NIL - The NCAA needs to disband asap and college football can reform with set guidelines around NIL, portal, etc. The players deserve to be "paid" and some form of cash compensation is reasonable. But, since most of the players will not make a living playing, schools need to commit to truly educating and providing players opportunities beyond the game. College football (and basketball) long ago forgot it was part of an educational enterprise.

NIL

Nov 1, 2022, 11:43 AM

This isn't an option. The NCAA no longer has jurisdiction on NIL. It was a decision by the courts. There's nothing they can do about it.

The only thing the NCAA can do is change the transfer rules. Which they should.

A few changes I'd suggest....

1. Players may transfer anywhere after their first two years.
2. When a coach leaves a program, players from that program may not transfer to the coach's new school for 3 years.
3. Keep the transfer windows but add a "transfer entrance date". Players need to not leave school in the middle of seasons.

I understand, but college football(the schools/conferences, etc.) will ultimately have to come together and agree to a set of rules (that will pass court judgement). What we have now is unsustainable.

I don't understand your logic with #2?

Many of these kids commit to the coach (not the school) and look up to them as a role model or even a father figure in some cases.

I think #2 is a very good idea, b/c once a school invests in a Student Athlete, the coach should not be able to take that investment simply because the athlete "Likes" te coach.

ACC-SEC Other than talent, the big difference between the conferences are people in seats and alumni. SEC stadiums are much larger than those in the ACC and the schools are larger which means they have a wider base.

NIL You need to remember that NIL is a law and is not just for football players. Athletes are having the opportunity to earn money but have not changed anything except they will have to file tax returns. There is no way of knowing what an athlete earns and it is nobody's business. My guess is the notion that NIL is about football in this state is false because I expect there are players on the South Carolina Women's Basketball team that will earn more than any football player at either Clemson or South Carolina.

Playoffs The committee picks the Playoff teams on December 4 and their vote is the only one that matters.

Agree about Dec. 4. I will not be watching tonight and will do my best to ignore all commentary. I'll add, I think in total, the CFP committee as done a good job ranking the final 4 teams each year. It's challenging when schedules and records are not comparable.

My NIL point was perhaps poorly worded. I understand the legal side and generally agree with the ruling. My point was more about competitive balance in an athletic environment. I suppose there has never been a true balance(like we see in professional sports), but perhaps now there is an opportunity, using NIL, to make it better.

Correct... SEC eyeballs far outnumber us and gap is growing larger.
