Carolina Beach Music

'Decoration Day' is Monday and kinda kicks off Summer in these parts.
Kids will be outa school. After sitting silent for months, folks will again show on the Clemson Lake.
It is all very exciting to me.

I play more tunes than most of yall and Summer kicks off my favorite genre -> "Carolina Beach Music"

Most folks in my neighborhood moved from up north (I consider anyone north of SC to be Yanks). Most of them are OK folks. Like most folks (even younger SC natives under 60) they have no clue what 'Carolina Beach Music' is.
I am here to help to help all.

CBM is music made popular in the 50s on the Grand Strand that carried into my era of the 60's.
To this day there are clubs and radio stations that only play this.
It is a simple music that makes your brain (and maybe you body) swing.
It aint "soul", "rock", 'blues" or "r&B', but it can be.
Best definition is "locals know it when they hear it".

"Shag" (and the tunes as to it) is the official South Carolina state dance/music by an act of our Congress.

To get my many northern friends and some here up to speed decided to share some Beach tunes from my Music Club Cloud where some of us on YardCrap swap tunes.

Tmail me for the password.

I tried to skip the old standards from the 50s we all know by heart, but some snuck in. I ended with too many. I intend to cull that back, but kicking one off is hard.

On a personal note, my two favorite tunes are relatively new - 'Ms Grace' and 'Brenda'. Try those.

Bill, you look real cool on the dance floor and the Shag
is a hard dance to learn. Years ago I had a friend that
transferred here from England and he told his wife, come
on honey, they are shagging at Myrtle Beach. I won't say
on here what he told me shag means in England I set him
straight.

That happened to us as well We lived in Switzerland for a few years

… while our daughters were in high school. My oldest daughter had a boyfriend from England and he came to our house to meet us.

The topic of dancing came up and my wife, from the Clemson area, mentioned that she loved to shag and would a shag anytime with anyone that wanted to! 😳

My daughter came home laughing the next day after her boyfriend told her about meeting us. She told my wife the her boyfriend was flabbergasted and didn’t think my wife was so “free” so to speak! Needless to say, she indeed is NOT that free! 🤣

We’ve had a good laugh about that for many years!! 😄

I wish Jerry had waited a couple of years before getting married. He was on the verge of replacing Shad as the best, but Jerry’s wife was not a competition dancer.

Over time Shag became competitive as to the moves. I grew up just ??

I took lessons every week from some of the best ever to take the floor around 1990 at Grouchos. I did not enjoy it as much. It was kinda different from the 60's where you just had a cold one and shook you ### a little with a beautiful girl. I prefer old style. Fun is where you find it.

Yes, TigerLinks..LittleRed Book is another smooth shag song and heard & danced to it a lot too~

Been out of shag dancing 9 years (age 74) due mainly to partner & breaking back/wrist but it was fun times socializing in 3 clubs we were members of (HHI, Beaufort & Charleston) and going to the SOS gatherings twice a year at O.D. (Ocean Drive SC) and dancing at Fat Harold’s (big time Clemson fan) and hearing big shag bands including TAMs.

Oh, learning a dance routine or step combination is unreal good for the mind as is the exercise is for heart & bone health.

Give it a try Boys/Girls!!

There was Art’s Seaside. Though just a tad underage I would go and enjoy the music of The Tams, The Swinging Medallions, The “Original” Drifters, Doug Clark and many more. Music, beer, girls (not necessarily in that order) and dancing! Mostly dancing the Shag.

Usually the music would start with a warm up band that consisted of the rhythm section of the main act and then the vocalists would come on and sing all the beach music hits.

It was just a wonderful time.

One of the best beach music bands of all time, General Norman Johnson & The Chairmen of the Board . . .

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h_9-Z4v7610

Growing up in a small town in Southside Virginia (Emporia) in the 1960s, I spent a good deal of time in Va Beach. Bill Deal & The Rhondells were a staple at the Peppermint Beach Club!

After graduating from Clemson in 1974, I lived in Wilmington, NC for 9 years. I got to attend a number of beach music festivals (Emerald Isle, Carolina Beach, White Lake, etc.) during those days listening to bands such as The Entertainers, North Tower, The Tams, The Fantastic Shakers, The Catalina’s and my favorite, The Band of Oz. My cousin, Jim Heidenreich was the original drummer for The Band of Oz!

I met Bill Deal in the mid 90’s, he gave me a couple of CD’s. I grew up a few miles from the Peppermint Beach Club in VB. My parents were Charlestonians and were great shaggers, Dad’s favorite song was Cherry Pie by Marvin and Johnny. I used to love to go back to the low country for weddings and see the whole dance floor shagging.

called "The breeze radio network" back in the 90s. It was like 4 stations from Charleston to Wilmington that played "beach boogie and blues". I recognized a lot of songs but there were also many I didn't know. It was so good to hear new to me music on the radio. I think the Windham brothers were part of it. Anyway it was good stuff and I miss that station.

Besides all the typical Beach music, it's were I first heard bands like Mojo Blues Band, a German band that did some great beach tunes. Pretty sure I first heard this old Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee song on The Breeze...

When I lived in eastern, NC back in the 1970's there was a place to go hear music and dance out near Fasion, NC called "Lake Artesia". It was a pond out in the middle of a cornfield, but they had a band come there very Saturday night. Mostly Top 40 stuff.

In the summers, they would be open on Wednesday nights as well. They brought in groups like The Drifters, The Tams, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, etc. It was great! A small building where you could walk right up to the band. Those old guys could put on quite a show.

Nothing like driving a tractor all day in the heat...driving 40 miles out to Lake Artesia...then 40 miles back home around 2am...then back on the tractor at 7am. I'd do it all again!

I grew up in Clinton. The radio stations back then (53-56 & 58-67) played mostly beach music. We didn't know that it was a regional music (VA Beach down to Atlanta). Good stuff. When you say "beach music", most people not from the region think that you're talking about the CA variety known as surf music. Ripete Records in Elliott SC (Cootlumbia) issued a ton of beach music CDs & I have them all, I think. Cliff Ellis even had a few tunes on them. They included some local band tunes. Somehow I missed 'Brenda'. Don't remember that one. Will have to check my stash.
