Hey. Don't knock old cars. My 99 Dakota looks good with a Tiger Paw and a Banks McFadden tiger in the rear window.

Honestly I love my old 2003 4Runner more than

The newer stuff I’ve driven over the years

No shame in it for me

(Also they don’t offer a v8 anymore in the 4Runner. Don’t even get me started on the cafe standards)

What is wrong with the Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards. Why not a gas tax.... lol. It was the fuel prices (not cafe) that caused the 4.7 in a 4runner to be a liability in 2007/2008 (and why the 4.7 was nixed). I don't think there was a V8 "mid-sized" SUV after that from any brand.

And the 4.7 was only offered "briefly" on the 4runner (basically only 4gen like your 2003). Basically as a displacement offering while they got the Sequoia/Tundra platform rolling and wanted to combat down-market without lowing the price of the new platform. Realistically the GE 4.0 is better as it offer a bit more responsive power while only a mild off on torque. They still have the 4.7+ but again, that is on the larger platforms. It is just a hard sell for a smaller displacement V8 when most V6s in the similar market product more. I know because I went on the fleet side of Fords with the 4.6/5.4 and I liked Ford's 3.7 more at the time.

Yeah that’s a lot of words

It will tow 8500 lbs. a lot more than the 4.0

Tow capacity is not necessarily determined by engine power, displacement or torques - it is based mopre by everything else on the vehicle (cooling needs, braking, rigidity, rear end ratio). It is a safety item moreso than a limit by the engine( as well as a warranty item). Even then it is a value proposition of why bother outfitting the V6 (which some buyers devalue) with the ample cooling/transmission/rearend to make it tow more when they can upsell on engine displacement along to cover cost. As identical engines within the Toyota family (ie the 4.0) have different tow ratings between the Taco (6,8K) and the 4runner (5k). I don't disagree that the 4runner tows less, but since most manufacturers know they can up-sell those that need a specific tow need, hit higher profit margins on the pickups, and things like the 4runner are just family station wagons nowadays. 7,500 was basically 1/2 trucks back in the day but most are now 10K+ Back when the 4th gen had the V8, it was unknown if Toyota could even make a full-sized truck.

And yeah, having a 4.11 rear end on my truck nets me 1,000 more capacity just over the 3.73 option of the same vehicle. Funny things.

Right, my brakes axles everything

Are bigger. Better transfer case ? Probably. Better transmission? Yeah. Trans cooler? Yea. It’s a great little truck

It’s low compression. No turbos. I just changed the coil packs and plugs last week. It took me less than an hour.
