He has progressed… from terrible to very bad to bad to below average this year. We are currently around 80th in net punting.

I don't think we've had many avg much better. Regardless, I remember him barely getting 35 yds. Lots of 20 yd shanks
From where he started to where he is now, he's very serviceable.

He averaged over 40 his freshman year.

Distance isn’t his problem, hang time and precision are. Most of his longer punts are line drives, which don’t give the coverage team time to close up, and his percentage of punts inside the 20 resulting in touchbacks is still way too high.
Probably the best we’ve had in the last decade was Bradley Pinion. In 2014 he had a 42.6 average, and a 40.3 net average, which shows how solid his hang time was to get good coverage. Also, out of 28 punts inside the 20, he had two touchbacks. Spiers is nowhere near either of those stats.

There’s bigger problems with the team to worry about.
With that said, I’m not saying the guy is terrible. I appreciate his contributions to the team. It just takes a ton to stand out as a punter.

I thought that he did better last year than he has this year. I don't know if the stats support that or not. I also thought that he started off better his first couple of years than he ended.
I've wondered if he is not somewhat of a fair weather punter. Early fall and domes = good. Late fall and road games up north = not so good. Once again, I don't know if the stats support it but that is what it has seemed like to me.
