Stop gap.

Don't get me wrong I like the hire. It's definitely an upgrade and there's a ton of potential. But this just seems like a meh he's the best we can get right now time is running out and we won't break the bank type a deal. I'm guessing salary will be right under 2 mil say 1.7 1.8 for ehhhh 3 years with a 1mil buyout. Plus this guy seems to really fit Clemson culture.

I guess we will find out when his contract details are released. I don't think that considering what I have read. If you are thinking a stop gap for Venables to come back, that isn't happening. Dabo would have kept Porkchop or promoted someone on staff if that were the case.

Venables to come back? Where on earth did you come to that thought?

Assistant coach buyouts are typically the full value of the contract.

I understand your point, but in this new modern era of college football (which really began with Saban going to Alabama) I don't think there's any such thing as a long term hire except for successful HC's.... Dabo has tried to balance 1) culture, 2) loyalty, 3) continuity, and 4) competency (defined as proven performance and results).... And I believe that the culture he has built (on Tommy Bowden's foundation) is of primary importance.... But I hope that he has finally learned that in this new modern era competency has to become the second most important factor.... Of course that means the better coaches will be difficult, if not impossible, to retain for very long.... But it should also cause Dabo to become more visionary and pro-active instead of loyal and reactive.... Saban went to Alabama when he was 57.... Dabo is now 55.... Maybe it's still true.... That the best is yet to come....

3 years (if that's what they agree to) isn't a stop gap.

I don't think we're gonna need the security cameras for this next part.

Morris was a stop gap as he put his hat in the ring for every available HC job from day one. This guy is not that IMO....

I don't think he is hiring him as a stop gap. He is a serious hire who isn't expected to leave it's an upgrade of some sort. Dabo wants continuity when possible.

Allen is a long time proven coach and will be a great coach for our defense. Very few coordinators stay in the jobs for years because the next step is a head coaching job. This a home run hire.

My buddy is a property manager and just called to say an Allen just signed a 12 month lease in Six Mile. Definitely lends credence to your theory that we are being taken for a ride

Most leases are for 1 year though. Most property managers do not like longer ones. Property rates rise and they don't want to stay locked in on a multi year and be losing money.

This guy coached a top ten defense that carried a limited offense to deep into the CFP. Who DO you have in mind to be a long term fix ? Name someone better.

This is a great get (even if you haven't heard his name much) and if he improves this defense accordingly, we should be deep in the mix for the CFP next year.

Wes filled the gap between BV and TT.

There's always going to be a gap to fill. Chad filled a gap until Jeff and Tony finished growing. Streeter filled a gap until Dabo found Riley.

We've seen one successful DC who didn't accept a HCing job in our lifetime, was it Foster at VT? He never took a HCing job even after several good offers including VT and replacing Beamer. There's always a gap because the right guy is going to leave one when he seeks elevation.

Reckon why his name is hard to remember!
