Cade's 2nd year as a starter.

Here is what I think we are all hoping for.

A little story.

Back in the 1990's Danny Kanell had his first year as a starter at FSU (QB) his junior year. His second year as a starter was (obviously) his senior year.

During the season, a reporter asked him, "You seem to be more comfortable running the offense this year. What is the difference between last year and this year."

Danny responded, "Last year, I came to the line and looked at the defense. Then we snapped the ball. I made my first read, then my second and then my third and found the open guy. This year I come to the line and look at the defense. I make my first read, my second read and my third read. Then we snap it. It's nice to know who's gonna be open before the snap."

I know that's a very simplistic answer. But I think it is what coaches are talking about when they say things like, "The game has slowed down for him" or "He understands the offense better" or "He's more comfortable running the offense."

So, say it however you want. But, I think everyone is hoping that Cade is "more comfortable running the offense."

Cade's decision making has to improve and he has to take better care of the ball

Hopefully he has matured that much since last year because he should be a star this year and top 5 next year.

Well, let's see: If he can make his reads/progressions, trust his eyes, not lose his composure and get happy feet, take care of the ball, and not force throws into double/triple coverage, he might just have a chance to be good.

A lot of the offenses failure last year has been put on Cade. But when you have no blocking in front of you and your receivers are in and out of the lineup due to injury. Then it is hard to build a rapport of knowing where your receivers will be pre-snap.

100% agree with this. I just hope we have that really fixed.

No doubt, poor O Line play had something to do with his poor performance last year. But let's be honest: he made a lot of really bad decisions that cost us dearly.

I agree with that.

When the OL is average at best, and the WR corp is decimated with injuries, it is extremely difficult nto to appear to have happy feet, make poor decisions, and turn the ball over way too often.

If the OL is as good as advertised and the receivers can stay healthy, then it will be amazing how much Cade improves this year.

I've never played quarterback, but i would think a quarterback at a D1 school could figure out which receiver (or no receiver) has the best chance be open before the ball is snapped. That has more to do with reading defensive formations than anything. Surely that is quarterbacking 101. Cade seems to be an emotional guy, so I think if he keeps that under control, he will perform well. He has shown some great ability on occasions. Here is to hoping he can put it all together this season. Go Tigers!

There’s A LOT to read on a defense. The same level of thinking is applied on defense—“make the QB think X, Y, Z and bait him into a turnover or to be uncomfortable.” You can have an idea on what might work pre snap, but you won’t know anything until the ball is snapped and disguised coverages show themselves.

This is why I want to see more pre snap motions because that automatically tells you if a defense is in man or zone.

I certainly hope that’s the case. I just want our OL to give him the time he needs to make good decisions. Of course, I want his decisions to come quickly and to be correct, but for him to have some time to operate. Go Tigers!!!

Cade has certainly has had his issues. NO doubt. Ill-timed fumbles and boneheaded decisions stick out

Just a few things I'd like to add:

His OL sucked alot at times last year. Awful recipe for new QB
His WR corp was mediocre at best
He should've played more in his first year with DJU still here. He'd be further along if he had.

But yes, time to step up. He's go the potentail..lets see if he and Garrett can make some magic this year. Better hope he stays healthy.....a long drop-off after Cade...

If the team around him measurably improves, Cade and the team will flourish. If it's the same old song as last year, it will be another bumpy year.

That may work if every one of the receivers know his routes, runs those routes as they should be run, and has the talent to not be overwhelmed in a one-on-one coverage situation by a physically superior defender who is very experienced.

Kanell had that luxury back during FSU’s salad days. Also, college defenses were simpler back then.

While much of your Kanell story has truth in it (I.e., the QB will play better when he knows the offense), today’s college game has tracked the NFL game in a quasi ‘back to the future’ sense. By that, the variable that allows a college offense to beat a modern (complex) college defense is a QB who can run.

Let’s compare Jordan Travis to CK2. CK2 is faster than Travis. However, Travis was a far more effective runner because his lateral quickness and tackle breaking ability was far superior to CK2’s. Of course, Travis knew the offense very well and would survey the field as long as the pocket stayed intact and would then continue to survey the field after the pocket deteriorated and he wiggled to unobstruct his field of vision again. Charlie Ward could also do this, but CW played in an era of simpler defenses and, quite frankly, an era when the overall skills + abilities of defenders was not as good as that of defenders today.

Then, there is accuracy and arm strength. Neither Travis nor CK2 were / are superior in that regard compared to a Drake Maye type or Patrick Mahommes type of QB.

Decision making by a QB is much harder today than it was back then. Maybe CK2 has acquired the decision making skills. I’m choosing to be optimistic.

Thanks again for sharing your historical perspectives as they relate to today’s game and to CK2.

I think all we need is junior year DK where he is able to progress through reads

Post snap. We have yet to see that consistently from Cade.
