Trigger warning: Running Post
Dec 14, 2020, 9:04 AM
|
|
I ran my first marathon Saturday in a time of 3:58:48. A sub-4 hour marathon is a goal that many set and accomplishing it on my first attempt, less than 2 months shy of 54, less that 2 years post-heart attack, and after running 16-18 months total is fairly significant. Running it alone and self supporting (was supposed to run the Kiawah Marathon but it was canceled) made it even more difficult. I didn't have aid stations, other runners to pace with, or anyone to encourage me over the last few miles.
It both sucked and wasn't too bad are equally true. You know going into it that it will suck, but I trained well and was prepared so I never hit the wall (I exceeded 2000 total miles run for the year at mile 19). My preperation moved my comfortable run distance out to half marathon distance and beyond. I can now run 16-18 miles comforatably at an 8:30 mile pace. It was just 6-8 miles at the end of "I don't want to be doing this anymore". The knees and feet hurt, but I fueled properly and my muscles held up. But that #### is difficult, and a lot of it is mental. Everything is telling you to stop.
My overall pace was 9:07 minutes/mile but was averaging around 8:30 half way, 8:45 at 20 miles, and around 8:55 at 24 miles. 3 of my last 4 miles were 11 min/miles (one was 9:38 when I realized I may not have been able to coast to sub-4 hour). I really could have pushed myself a bit harder at the end. My heart rate averaged 138 bpm with a max of 158 bpm (55% was below 138 and 6.4% was above 152). When I started this journey those were my walking heart rates.
The odd thing is I went from "will never run a marathon" after last November's half marathon, to "will only do this once" up until a few weeks ago, to "will definitely do this again" before I even started on Saturday. I will definitely be running the Kiawah Marathon next December for reals.
I fully understand that there is something seriously wrong with people who run long distance. There is absolutely no reason to run 26.22 miles, knowing that you will suffer. But that is entirely why you do it. And you can't fully appreciate the difficulty until you do it. I've got an even deeper respect now for anyone who has.
And I felt pretty good afterwards, ran 2 miles yesterday to work out the stiffness, and will get out for a 2-3 mile run at lunch today.

crowds to see world class runners run by really fast, which lasts for around 22 seconds if you have a good view, doesn't sound particularly appealing. Would you say it's more, or less appealing, to watch 50 somethings on 4 hour paces jog by? Granted, you get at least double the viewing time, upwards of 45 seconds, depending on your vantage point.

That is good for a fast time but tough to manage your speed, might blow your load too fast.
My marathon PR is 3:35:05.
My watch estimates my best Marathon time now as sub 3:30, I think it is fu>cking with me.

Makes locking in a steady pace more difficult. But probably has more longer sections that Savannah. I hate turns.

I didn't get any sub-8 miles Saturday but I believe I had 3 on my 10 mile run the week before where I had a 8:10 average. My 10k best is sub-8 minute average. I just can't keep that up. I do think I could complete a half marathon in 8-8:10 minute miles on a good day.

level, a sub-4:00 26.2 is very a solid accomplishment. My first 26.2 was well over 4:00 but under 5:00 and people told me I did great. If you keep this up (not recommended) you should see those times shrink a lot AND you could qualify for Boston as you age.
Congrats!!!

IF you keep running, should be able to hit it before then.

APM gave up the Boston Marathon chase when he realized he'd have to keep running as if marathon training for a while and THEN beat the posted Boston qualifying times by about 5 minutes to be on the safe side. Watched a couple of buddies of mine not make the cut. No phukking way I was going to keep running that much only to not qualify due to so many people applying. THEN my buddies ran the one in 2018 when it was raining and hailing with strong headwinds and APM was like #### that. NAW.
That sealed the deal for APM's retirement from 26.2s.

I understand the physical toll that it takes on the body.
Dec 14, 2020, 10:43 AM

I'm at 3:50 max on a good day where everything goes perfectly. That time is 6 years away (and reality is that I would need lower.
I'm hoping to run one more for an official time, but I would destroy my body continuing to do this. I'm able to run everyday and run the miles that I do because I'm smart enough not to destroy my body running.
With running it's better to fade away than to burn out.

I ran it on the North Augusta Greeneway.
Dec 14, 2020, 11:15 AM

A few places where residential roads cross, but rare to see a car and they almost always stop and allow the right of way. Biggest issue is bikes, passing walkers who take up the entire path, and dogs on leashes. I did a 7 mile out and back, 6 miles gradually uphill (30-50 ft per mile) and 6 miles gradually downhill. Instead of doing the 6 mile uphill a 2nd time I did a couple shorter up and backs and finished with a loop around the riverfront. I also wanted to stay within a couple miles of the car over the 2nd half just in case I had any issues.
I run the North Augusta Greeneway (spelled correctly) a lot and do all my long runs there.

Well since we are bragging about marathons...

I dont run them, but my wife does. We do the Kiawah every year. Sometimes half, sometimes full.
Like I said, i dont run... but i do make signs. They are joungish and i pretty much ridicule the runners the whole time. This led to the discovery that most runners are joungish because besides a couple of #### yous... most people laugh.
I brag about this because it is fun and the runners really like it... and I am awesome. So much so that i have had a full marathon medal given to me by one runner, I had the news channel come and ask who i was because everyone was coming up to me and giving me a hug afterwards. About 8 years ago, i was a topic on the Kiawah Marathin FB page.
I keed about bragging about being good at signs... it is fun though. But for realzies... iffins my wife is running the full, yalls pace is about the same so you will see me a bunch. You should know who i am because i will be the a-hole with the signs.
Also, if you are the dude whose son did the karate, i would like to talk to you about that too.
