Brownell Criticism

The tigers haven’t figured out how to get Girard shots.

It became very apparent in ACC play that athletic opposing guards can shut him down. He doesn’t have the foot speed to create his own shot. They get in his chest and he’s neutralized.

Watching the Cuse, Boehiem used screens to run him open. We don’t.

I know our offense runs through the post but you have the second all time leading three point shooter in ACC history and we’ve made few offensive adaptations to get him looks.

It’s not great coaching. Or at least not to this unknowledgable fan.

He’s coach for life now so deal with it. He is older than me and admits he is not eating well so I might live to see another Clemson basketball coach - but that is definitely a long way off.

Girard is 3rd in the ACC in 3 points attempted, 3rd in 3 pointers made, and has a 3 point shooting percentage better than any year at Syracuse.

But sure, make up bs to cry about.

He only had 1 year at syracuse where he attempted more 3 pointers than he is this year. It was last year where he was the only offense on a crappy team. He averaged 7.2 3 pointer attempts per game. This year he is averaging 6.9 3 point attempts per game. Last year his 3 point % was 38.1%. This year his 3 point % is 42.8%.

Despite attempting less 3's per game, he is averaging more makes per game this year because he is getting better looks.

What a failure of a post.

no leaping ability to go up and get his shot anything other than blocked in there, which he has done on several occasions. He is at home outside, deadly on any reasonably open look for three. Play to your strengths, young man!

Huh? Girard is constantly running off screens. Pin downs, curls, you name it. They don’t always work, but it happens multiple times during every game

Have a difficult time seeing what is happening on the court. OR.. they think they know more than others do! The OP obviously has a limited knowledge of basketball. Tiddlywinks should be their sport of choice. It is rather simple!

Girard is without question the perfect fit with a guy like Hall in the lineup.
To some, when you miss a shot you should be benched. BB has done a LOT creating this lineup for me to enjoy.

We routinely run Girard off of screens to try to get him open.

Sometimes multiple screens on the same possession.

He is averaging 15 points per game this year, which isn’t far off from his 16.4 last year.

He’s having to share shots with PJ Hall, which he didn’t last year. However, this year he is shooting better from the field overall, as well as from three and from the free throw line.

I don’t know what you expected from him, but I’d say he is right where he is supposed to be. I’d like to get him more open shots too, but we are forcing teams to choose whether to double the post or not. They double it and we make them pay from three. They don’t double and we have an advantage inside. Makes sense to me.

Does it hurt Girard given that Chase isn't a natural PG?

I generally like Chase at PG and think he’s made the transition well, but I do think he struggles sometimes deciding whether to look for his own shot or focus on facilitating for others.

Since I didn't pay much attention, is Dillon a more natural PG? Because this seems like a position we could pursue in the portal for next year.

Yes, Dillon is a natural PG.

He’s a very good ball handler and generally makes good decisions. I like his defense a lot. His offense leaves a lot to be desired at this point, but I believe that will come with time.

Ball handling, court vision, passing ability, creating your own shot... You know, being a floor general.

Chase seems to struggle with his decision making, which is what JK alluded to.

Ball handling could get better. Especially last year as he had some silly turnovers. Some this year, but not as bad last year.

Last year he averaged more assists per game than any PG clemson has rostered since ed scott. Chase has elite passing ability as well as court vision.

He is also great at creating his own shot with his ability to drive the basket. His shooting could get better, but his ability to create is great.

His assist numbers are down this year and that mostly has to do with girard playing some point as well as increased minutes from true PG dillon hunter. Also our 3 point shooting has been down which has hampered his assist numbers.

I think assist and assist to turnover ratio are pretty critical for your primary ball handler. Our stats here have been terrible under Brownell. Like last in the league nearly every year terrible.

At Syracuse, he had the ball in his hands a lot. Learning a different style. The North Carolina game was his best game because he did a great job of moving without the ball. 5 of 10 from 3, 6 rebounds. Relax and stop looking for daily criticism of CBB.

I agree. I will say that the UNC gm was the best effort that I've seen this year

as far as making an effort to get him open and get him going. Not only did it work, it energized him and he seemed to have a little more pep. which is the point of doing it. I suspect the energy could also be attributed to the fact of Clemson playing in the dean dome with a lead as well. But getting a couple of good looks early and hitting the shot goes a long way for not only Joe but the entire team.

So i'm interested and look forward to seeing how we progress in the lesser games like BC and GT. Hopefully its part of the new routine. I think alot of folks on this thread forget the majority of the other games where he was fending for his own shot and shooting up prayers for 4 of his 7 attempts from 3. Simply saying he's shooting more threes this year is meaningless. Theres no doubt he shoots alot of the 3's but getting him quality looks is a whole other task. That late 3 vs UNC was a dagger. Thats what his value is. He's the guy that can hit that dagger shot late in these tight games. So if they can get him a look it woudl be ideal.

I like what I saw against UNC. Coaching seems to be coming around to recognize how important a 3 is late in games and have started to make the effort so kudo's to Brad for doing something about it. I've watched every game this year btw and understand what an asset Joe is and tend to specifically watch him alot of the time even without the ball. Many games i could sense frustration and sometime lack of purpose in the offense. I see his limitations as well and can make a common sense assumption that the coaching needed to make an effort to help him be more successful. I think they are figuring it out and I hope to see this be the trend.

I believe you can argue that Girard has had a tougher go of it in ACC play. The stats below capture his offensive performance rating (OBPR), defensive performance rating (DBPR), and overall performance rating (BPR) within a Bayesian model. Essentially, these ratings reflect a player's individual efficiency and on-court play-by-play impact while accounting for the strength of other teammates on the floor and the strength of the opponent's players on the floor in a given setting (offense or defense). An interpretation for the numbers is given below as well.

Given the preseason expectations for him were consistent with what he had done at Syracuse, he is having a career year in performance. However, much of this improvement was done in non-conference play, where his numbers were extremely high in early January prior to getting into the heart of the ACC conference schedule. Since then, his offensive and defensive metrics have fallen off a bit from what he had done prior; however, his offense performance is still much better than any year prior. Defensively though, it would be nice to see that performance rating improve to what was expected of him in the preseason.

2023-24:
Preseason Expectations: OBPR (2.68) / DBPR (0.67) / BPR (3.35)
Early January: OBPR (4.53) / DBPR (0.41) / BPR (4.94)
Present: OBPR (3.97) / DBPR (0.19) / BPR (4.16)

Historically:
2022-23: OBPR (2.61) / DBPR (0.12) / BPR (2.72)
2021-22: OBPR (2.91) / DBPR (0.71) / BPR (3.62)
2020-21: OBPR (2.06) / DBPR (1.47) / BPR (3.53)
2019-20: OBPR (2.51) / DBPR (-0.42) / BPR (2.09)

BPR Interpretation (Present 2023-24):
If Girard were on the court with 9 other D1 average players, Clemson’s offense would be 3.97 points per 100 possessions better than average, or if he were not on the floor and were replaced by another D1 average player. Similarly, Clemson’s defense would be expected to be 0.19 points per 100 possessions worse (conceding 0.19 PP100 more) while he’s on the floor. Overall, Clemson would be expected to outscore the opponent by 4.16 points in a 100 possession game.
