There are more basketball coaches than there are basketball jobs...

which tells me the hiring process is all wrong. When a team interviews a coach the coach should have to tell the school how many games they will win, how quickly they will get it done, and how inexpensively they will do it for. This is not dissimilar from the way you hire a handyman to build a deck on your house. Remember, it's just a deck, not you actual home (football). And if the coach does not do what they said, they don't do it in the time frame they provided, or they attempt to ask for more money, then they are fired and sued for breach of contract. You will have no trouble finding another handyman to do the job for next to nothing.

I once hired a plumber on craigslist and much to my surprise it did not go as planned. He showed up to the house in a beat up dodge neon with no tools and said he wanted to "unclog my big pipe"

Maybe we can look for a coach who can also do all the handiwork around campus? He could grow and be part of the school like Charles S Dutton in Rudy, but win games for us. Huh huh?

If that handyman does not perform up to par I think you should give him more money as incentive. If that does not work, give him even more money. You might have to buy him a new set of tools in the process.

Not entirely true, Back when I lived in Gary Indiana

There were more High Schools(4) than Basketball head coaches, so I tried my hand at coaching the Men's Varsity team at Gary Technical High School. Nobody wanted the job because we had not had a winning season since the Chystler plant left, causing all the basketball coaches to seek employment in Myrtle Beach.
anyway, I was a failed college coach getting a chance at redemption when I was hired to direct the local High School basketball program. After a teacher persuaded my star player Jimmy Chitwood to quit and focus on his long-neglected studies, I struggled to develop a winning team in the face of community criticism for my temper and unconventional choice of assistant coach, Shooter fletch, a notorious alcoholic.
Eventually, I met some of the townsmen in the barbershop, who bombarded me with questions. They all agree that Jimmy must rejoin the Huskers for them to have a winning season. Losing patience with all the questions and unwelcome advice, I cut the meet and greet short and left.
One afternoon, as Jimmy shot baskets at the school's outdoor court, I approached him and asked why he wasn't in class that day, but Jimmy didn't answer. I go on to tell him that I believe Jimmy has a special talent that belongs only to him. I conclude by stating matter-of-factly that I don't care if Jimmy rejoins the team, and walk away.
Eventually, Jimmy Rejoined the team and we made it to the State Championship and won a nail-biter. I was carried off the court by my players and I am not sure what happened after later, my memory just goes fuzzy after that.
