NIL/Portal is good for college football

Besides the fact that players deserve it, parity has already and will continue to increase.
Colorado is a perfect example. That program has been irrelevant for decades, but now people are staying up until 3am to watch them play Colorado St.
Excited for the future of the sport.

I agree 100%. Each year there are only so many players in the country with the talent to play at the D1 level and the 85 scholarship rule will always keep a Georgia or Alabama, for example, from getting every player available. Kids want to play and will go where they can, whether it is out of high school or through the Portal after a year or two. Football is football.

I lived in Denver when Colorado went to PAC 12 championship and nobody knew or cared. The whole area cares now so that is a good thing.
If ratings go up then it is good, if ratings go down then it is bad. Only time and money will tell.
I know I am less interested in the CFB but that could be for various reasons. If others stop paying attention then there will be less money. Interest in recruiting has to have diminished? Who cares about high school kids anymore when you can get known commodities in the transfer portal. Less attention to high school players may be a good thing.
I liked the NFL and College Football. CFB for the pageantry and honor of representing your not for profit university. I enjoyed keeping up with recruiting but now could care less. I never bought a lot of NFL gear because I didn't think I was supporting my team but rather the for-profit owners of the organization. With College I felt like I was supporting an academic institution where I had a degree and indirectly benefited from the prestige even if I was disillusioned. I never understand when people are proud to be a fan of an NFL team and they do well especially when you don't live in the City. You didn't do anything to earn the fandom, you just one day decided hey I like this team. With CFB maybe you lived close to a team, had friends or family that went to a college or ideally you yourself went there and are thus part of the system. You can't just choose that you have to work for it.

there are TONS of people who choose their college team just like they would an NFL team. Why do you think Notre Dame has so many fans? Most of their fans probably have no connection other than they are Irish. I wouldn’t say they worked for it.

Being Irish or Catholic has very little to do with the current appeal of the Notre Dame brand. It is far beyond that.
For the record, I am NOT an ND fan at all.

As someone who has catholic family in the Midwest it helps a ton still. Hard to explain if you’ve never lived there or had family in the Midwest. It’s a different beast than the South in this aspect.

You left out the fact that almost all Cat-o-licks are fans. Those that are not, like Boston College. As this is one of the largest cults in the world there are a bunch of 'em.

It is interesting to witness the parity in college football now. This is the first year in a long time where several teams have a legit shot at winning the national title. Does anyone even know who the best team in the country is?
The assumption was that NIL/portal was going to make college football even more uneven then it already was. But it seems like they are having the opposite effect. It's allowing teams that were right on the cusp to add a few pieces to take them over the hump. Pretty cool to watch.

They way it is now is terrible for the kids. Only advantage is for the sport and viewership. Look up the amount of kids in the portal who don’t find a place to go on and play. They get told they can make it and instead of sticking it out and getting a degree they are done. NIL same thing seniors in high school are being promised millions to sign and when it doesn’t pan out they are transferring school after school. I’m all good for a portal but a degree should be a requirement and NIL shouldn’t be allowed until your sophomore year. Those rules would go a long way in not only helping the sport but the kids too.

While I think parity is good for the college game, the NIL needs to be restrained in some way. If not, guess what, the same 5-10 schools with the big bucks will dominate and there goes the parity. Right now there are no guard rails. It’s a free for all. And a free for all is NOT good for the college game. Put some restrictions on the number of times you can transfer and after the first transfer you have to sit out a year and do away with all of the exceptions to the “you got 5 years to get in your 4 years of eligibility”.

You know what else has increased? Corruption.
NIL/Portal could be good for college football. But it needs to be re-implemented, monitored, and enforced properly.

overblown, though we could definitely use a few guardrails.
With NIL, while amounts need not be made public, there should be some internal transparency in place here and reasonable values based on market metrics associated with any deal. As an example, if a player is being offered $1 Million in "NIL" out of high school, what exactly is this player providing in promotional value to have earned that? Are they doing commercials? Making public appearances? Appearing in other ads? Are they getting a cut of merchandise being sold with their N on it? To me this is an area where the NCAA, or its CFB successor, could differentiate between actual NIL and simply paying to play. Failure to report accurately would be a major violation and invite penalties.
With the Portal, I would allow the free pass once, prior to the beginning of a student-athlete's sophomore season. I would also allow for a free pass after earning a degree. Outside of those instances, the player would sit a year and lose that year of eligibility alongside. If an athlete doesn't want to stay in college, practice with the team, but not play that season, then grab a paycheck with a USFL or XFL team, or Europe, or whatever until NFL eligibility opens up.
Go College Football.

I am all for pro players making as much as they possibly can. Yay capitalism. I'm also for the NFL having a salary cap so that it's an even playing field and teams can't just "buy" their way into the playoffs or into a championship. What we have in college football is an unsustainable free for all which will only get worse until the golden goose is dead.

Lmao i love hearing this argument. The thing is there will always be a few top teams in college football, parity is never a thing and now that money has become a major factor in collegiate sports the gap between haves and have nots will widen. Those players that were diamonds in the rough or not recruited wont be staying at the smaller schools anymore. Schools that scouted out a player and gave him an offer will no longer be rewarded for that work. Thats a parity killer if anything.

NIL and Portal changes remind me of the way the NFL and MLB changed with the introduction of free agency. I grew up following Dodger teams that were grown through their farm system and players often played their entire careers on one team. Loving a team was to believe you knew and loved the players. Free agency changed all that and fans relationship with their teams changed with it. It did provide more immediate opportunities for teams to change their prospects, it certainly benefited some players financially. Both leagues have seen examples of successful teams who aggressively embrased free agancy and improved their teams (some failed spectacularly) It seems in recent years the most successful teams have returned to models where they have focused on strengthening farm teams and loaded up on young home grown talent like Houston and Atlanta.
College football will evolve as well. There will be teams like Colorado who will benefit in the short term by agressively embracing NIL and Portal strategies. Teams employing more conservative strategies I believe will succeed as well. The question we all are concerned with is will these changes change fans relationship with their teams and their level of interest in the sport.
All I can say is I grew up a diehard Dodger fan, listened or watched almost every game. I havent watched an entire MLB baseball game in 20 years except the Savannah Bananas who are changing the game entirely from the game I once loved. Today I feel about Colorado the way I felt about the Yankees, cant wait for someone to beat the crap out of them. I applaud Dabos effort to continue to succeed without jumping into the new mainstream. The battle between the old way and the teams that have to embrace improvement through the portal is the side story we are all facinated to witness as it is evolving. Yes Saturday is the most important game Clemson has played in many years because it is this question which is being tested. Im pulling for Dabo, he has chosen a path less traveled. He may not succeed Saturday, it will not cahnge my support for his chosen approach and the reasons for it.

Completely disagree. Players have always been paid. Its called a free education. If the athletes are now employees, they should be forced to sign a four year contract. The end of college football is in sight.
