those early years, which eventually led to the formation of the ACC.
Further, we are paying the price right now for a lack of foresight in the early 80's, when we failed to exit the ACC upon its levy of additional penalties against Clemson (another story in of itself.) I strongly supported then our public acceptance of the penalties with a concurrent announcement that upon its completion we were resigning from the conference. Following, we should have applied to the SEC, and (more than likely) we would have been members therein for almost 40 years.
I have consistently here on Tigernet and elsewhere for the past 40 years admitted my disgust with the conference, particularly its control by the North Carolina schools, and the necessity for our withdrawal and reapplication elsewhere. That failure all those years ago along with our failure to take strong objection to subsequent conference actions, particularly its expansion, GOR horsemanure and TV negotiations, has led to the bugaboo we now face.
Simply put, I believed all along that continued membership would eventually lead to misadventure, which is our situation right now. We have to act and act now.

Back then, about half of current SEC, most of ACC and a few others. Biggest rivals then were SC and Auburn.

Also we were less than a decade removed from a world War, there weren't any black or female students at Clemson, and the forward pass was a novelty; so not sure how many parallels we can make to that move.
