The Wall Street Journal is reporting a $7.5 billion over the next 7 years - that's just insane.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/big-ten-tv-rights-11660829533
And it's only going to get more massive as they intend to add more HUGE TV markets in the next few years. Start with their East coast to now West coast markets and they absolutely dwarf any other conference. No other conference is close - It's just crazy. Like them or not, those guys are money makers.

I could be wrong but I think we are completed hosed. With ESPN owning the rights to both the SEC and ACC, I don't see ESPN or the SEC being motivated that would involve any changes regarding our status. We have zero leverage at this point. We need to win it all this year and then try to make a power play but may still not be enough. The revenue the SEC and Big 10+ schools will be getting will be too much to overcome in the long run.

I would personally like to invite Clemson to the B1G party. With football breaking away from ncaa, unlimited coaches/assistants, and players being paid, things are going to get real expensive. The B1G needs to get quality football teams and expand southward. I can understand you guys wanting to be in the sec because of proximity, rivalries, and culture, but the B1G could really use you to anchor the SE. If you had to quatify your desires, would you be 90% sec, 10% B1G? 75/25? 50/50? I would really like to know everyones thoughts

I agree 100%. I see the appeal of the SEC but minus geography, the BIG+ is probably a better fit. I would love to be able to see a few away games in the SEC but if it means passing on a BIG+ offer, forget it. All I know is that staying put will be a death sentence to our athletic programs and if our football team falters even in the slightest, we will lose our bargaining power. We need to force the issue soon. Once the dollars start flowing, lookout.

I see mention about trading us for teams like Maryland and even Rutgers but there is NO WAY the Big Ten will let those teams go. What many are not realizing is that all of these Big Ten moves in the last few years - including the recent ones - is about TV markets and MONEY. Rutgers brings in the NYC market - and Maryland the Baltimore - Washington DC markets. Those guys aren't dummies - more like ruthless business men

I'm telling you they do as I worked in NYC 3 to 4 years ago and quite a few of us watched CF on Saturdays. I remember the OSU-Rutgers game was huge in TV ratings, But go ahead and argue. In fact, keep arguing all the way up to the point when we're trying to get into the Big Ten

Well, hard call. I'd probably go with Clemson - Michigan but my point is that the Big Ten is tying up those huge markets like NYC, Chicago, LA, Philly etc..... and the more that those conference teams are exposed to those markets over the next few years, the more the fans start following them. Take a trip through the Big Ten footprint - starting on the East Coast and run through the big city / markets in Big Ten territory - it's staggering. Saw an article that projected the Big Ten payout to each team STARTING at $102 to 105 million - that's starting - per team - in 2024 and they have every intention of expanding farther. I'd just like to see Clemson part of that

averaging a paltry 266k viewers a game, and that's with top ten draws OSU, PSU, and Michigan on their annual schedule, at least according to the numbers from Swarley's post above. And they are in the #1 media market in America.
Temple outdraws Rutgers for viewership, as does USF and Memphis. Tulsa trails by only 1k.

Really ? Are you serious about not following CF in the North? Take a look at this articla

4 out of the top 5 fan bases are northern fan bases. Some on here need to get real. And OSU dwarfs everyone else
Have you ever been to Columbus Ohio - or Ohio in general. Try it sometime and then come back and tell me how no one up there follows CF.
I obviously want to see Clemson in the Big Ten for obvious reasons

This is the reason I keep saying the ACC needs to go after Texas Tech, Ok State, Cinci, Arizona State, West Virginia. One they are not bad football programs but they bring in TV markets we do not have. And travel is not as bad as having to go to the west coast.

If such a move ever occurred then I like the idea of adding Clemson, FSU, UNC, Miami, UVA, and maybe pick another team such as GT, VT, or NC State. That would put the conference at 20 teams. Then I'd add another 4 teams from the West to go along with USC and UCLA to bring the total to 24 teams. I'd then divide the conference into 3 divisions of West, North, and South. You'd have to figure out how to determine a conference champion, but you'd be able to schedule 7 games within your normal territory to limit travel, and then play 2 games against non-division teams each year for a total of 9 conference games.

I just realized that I got lost on my math along the way since you'd only have 6 teams from the West and 6 from the South with what I just put out there. I suppose then 4 divisions with 6 teams so you'd play 5 games against teams in your territory and 3 games against other teams in the conference while staying with 4 OOC games in this case. This way you'd really only have to travel far from home 1 or 2 times per year depending on whether you had 1 or 2 home games out of your division in a particular year.

B1G affiliation would do much more for a Clemson degree than the SEC could ever

Aligning our university with academic institutions in the B1G, while expanding our brand on a national level instead of those within a regional sports-only conference like the SEC would only help each elevate the school as a whole.
While the SEC offers more exciting matchups based on proximity, tradition, culture — as you mentioned — it does nothing to elevate the university’s profile. Especially now that the B1G will be featured in every prime football window on every major network (aside from ABC). You’d be talking Clemson on Fox, CBS, AND now NBC. Without even paying a cable subscription! And those channels are available in every American household, *free of charge to consumers.*
Not to mention the B1G has a home for each of our varsity sports — men’s and women’s — which the SEC cannot offer.
Don’t get me wrong. SEC membership is more fun for 12 Saturdays a year from a fan and travel perspective. Seven if you only make it to home games. But I’m no more excited to host Mississippi State than Minnesota or Vandy over Rutgers.
Playing primetime matchups on basic cable in the Big House, the Shoe, Happy Valley, the Rose Bowl/LA Coliseum, Camp Randall, and possibly Notre Dame would still be amazing. Give us some Southern partners like FSU, GT, UNC, VT/UVA, and it’s palpable — it’d be like playing in the current ACC but with more money, more exposure, more fanfare, and more intrigue all while elevating the brand and profile of the entire university. PLUS we’d never have to worry about paying the bills.
So, personally, I’m 75% pro-B1G when looking at the big picture.

There are pros and cons to both the Big 10 and the SEC, but either option is vastly superior to the ACC.
So I am 50/50 as to the SEC vs Big 10. The question is....What do we need to do to get to sit at the Big Table?

The ACC has leverage, it just needs to wield it appropriately.
Clemson Miami FSU Va Tech Louisville Pitt NC State UNC
These eight programs make for a very attractive football product on a weekly basis. Add West Va into the mix - one of college football's more marketable home environments - and this becomes a highly valuable and sought after mix of football content spanning the East coast.
The remaining six ACC schools (Ga Tech, UVA, Duke, Wake, BC, Cuse) can form a second division, add some filler eastern teams like USF, UConn, and Memphis, and cut their own football deal.
In other sports, including basketball, we stay united for scheduling and spring/ACC Network content.
League leaders, including our own Graham Neff, are discussing scenarios such as this together right now. By consolidating the league's football-intensive programs together with a much higher frequency of games between them, we can accelerate our media rights value, with only nine teams splitting that extra value instead of 16, 18, or 20.

unless those schools can collectively identify a way to void the GOR.
The ACC remaining in-tact is the least desirable option because there are no teams that can be added to the league that will really move the needle on the revenue gap.

More than 50% of the teams, which that 8 represents,
Aug 18, 2022, 12:54 PM
|
|
could accomplish eliminating the GOR. Heck, 7 of them plus Notre Dame's vote is also > 50%. Looking at you, UNC.
The moving the needle component rests primarily through consolidating the league's more valuable football programs into a single division where they compete against each other more frequently. Since divisions, we've had only 12 games per season roughly to offer our media partner from this mix. By consolidating, and adding a media friendly program and venue like WVa offers, we'd have up to 27. The new divisionless format kicking off next year only adds 3-4 per season, which doesn't bridge the gap enough.
It's not even as much competitive levels - many of the six slated for the lower division produce some decent teams often enough, while many in the upper can struggle at times. It's the media appeal of home games at their smaller and less attended venues that weighs the whole enchilada down. By removing them from the equation, those at the top can reap greater, and more commensurate, benefits.

networks. I saw one guy say that 93% of Big Ten football will be on these networks. Am I reading this correct? And if so, does this destroy the Big Ten Network strategy?
It's interesting...I realize that it takes the whole conference into account, but this is all prompted off of them getting UCLA and Southern Cal. But if you look at this article, UCLA is basically around the VT level of TV viewers:
https://medium.com/run-it-back-with-zach/which-college-football-programs-bring-in-the-most-tv-viewers-efc03c689e50
Kind of crazy. Someone on here knocks the idea of getting WV, but if you picked them up and Notre Dame (I know...I know...), that would actually be a significantly larger increase in viewers than UCLA/Southern Cal is.
Anywho...it's all nuts. Totally nuts. Are advertisers really going to spend enough to make this a good investment? Are they going to have five hour long games to sell the advertising time to make up for the costs?

Trust me ESPN and the other networks will keep passing you the buck in whatever streaming or cable tv provider you have. Seen my ESPN+ subscription is set to go up or already has and I only wanted it to watch Clemson baseball games.

Why do you all keep on with ND coming to the ACC? Why would they? Way more $ and tradition in the B1G, if they were to join a conference!

One of the reasons that UCLA and USC was brought in to the Big Ten is the massive amount of Big Ten alumni in the So. California area. I read a while back that the Rose Bowl absolutely loves it when OSU plays in that Bowl just because they'll sell 15,000 to 20,000 tickets to OSU people just living in the So. Calif area. Same with Penn State and Michigan

I guess the ACC will need more than their Fish Bait contract to keep up.

We got to do something. We can't keep up and yes, true that money isn't buying a good football team but this will help tremendously for the other sports.
I hope the SEC makes a counter move and invites us. As great as Dabo is, this will eventually drive us out sadly.

Just read that with this new $7.5 billion deal. the now huge Big Ten Network, Bowl Games and the CFP, the estimated payout per team will be somewhere between $100 to 103 million per team / year - for a starting point. More expansion and deals are coming. We better get into the Big Ten or SEC just to survive

The ACC has very little leverage at this point. Clemson can't leave because of the GOR for a long time. The only hope is that 8 teams from the ACC all left for the BIG or the SEC at the same time.

successful teams just large schools and alumni that = ratings.
BIG has only won 1 NC in football the last 20 years and only 1 in basketball the last 32 years.

Osu won in 2002 and 2014. They also made it to 3 additional NC games since ‘06. I prefer not to remember the outcomes of those games because they weren’t particularly close. The rest of the B1G hasnt held up their end of the bargain. Hopefully times have changed.

SEC got PWNED by the B1G. Yaaaay!

Sankey's gotta be pounding his head on his desk.
Less than two months ago, all of CFB revolved around the SEC and how much money they were going to make under their upcoming contract with ESPN. Everyone else was "worthless".
After 20+ years in executive positions in the NFL, Kevin Warren brought two new schools, fresh "NFL-style" thinking, new blood and "connections" into the stale CFB media process and left the SEC in the dust.
I love it. I will never stop despising the SEC and this is a great day! Sankey thought ditching CBS and locking up the mighty ESPN was a genius move that would put the SEC on the highest perch for a very long time. Instead, the B1G was able to add a desperate CBS and a surprisingly aggressive NBC to their main partner Fox and it's ball game.
Another thing: The B1G contracts expire 4 years prior to the E(SEC)PN deal. The revenue gap between the two will grow wider beginning in 2030.
I didn't think the B1G would be cutthroat enough to savage their longtime partner, the Pac 12, and grab USC. That was a BOSS move. However, I do think they will eventually snag UO/UW/Stanford/Cal which would give them 6/8 of the original Pac 8 teams. So they will end up taking care of their old friends after all.
All is fair in love and football.

Feelings: Feels like the BIG wants us. Has always felt like the SEC does not. Feels like the money is so big now we have to find a way to join the BIG.

Clemson has this budding rivalry with Ohio State and offers entrance into SEC recruiting territory for the B1G. Thats what Clemson should be pitching the B1G.

Obviously, John Swofford was NOT involved in the negotiations for B1G deal.

Yeah, I'm starting to think we're a better fit with the BIG. The money probably has something to do with that. But it also seems as if the BIG sees value with us as they go nationally.

I hope to witness Swoffy dragging very heavy cables on the sidelines for Raycom at the Nowhere Decent Bowl in mid-December.
