Tony Rice.

Does anyone remember if Danny tried to get Tony to come to Clemson? Just watching the 30 for 30 and brought back memories of how good he was at Woodruff.
I know we had Rodney at time. Being that I was only in 4th grade and I don't believe Al Gore had invented internet, it was hard to follow recruiting in those days.

I believe he was the QB that was committed to Clemson and Lou Holtz visited in home with him and his family and he suddenly switched to Notre Dame weeks before signing day. Many wondered what Lou had in the envelope if you know what I mean.

I'm from Woodruff. I talked w/ the salesman at the Ford place(an n.c. state grad)who said tony and his mom got new cars from there every year, paid by a ND booster while tony was at ND.The cars were listed in his uncles nameTony lived in a real nice condo in south bend and kept 2 new cars there.Rumor has it that he took a pay cut to play canadian league ball.Nothing like NCAA immunity.Lou is a corrupt man.

We were ranked #4 in country to start 88 season. Back in those days was the true meaning of the word we hate to hear ESPN say.
We always lost to some scrub like Duke or NC State.

Pete Rowan buddied up with Garcia on the original "Old and In The Way" albums
and you're right....in his prime, you count on a couple of fingers flatpickers in Rice's league

very underrated and I've always been surprised it wasn't covered more than it was.
Several years ago, saw what now constitutes New Riders Of The Purple Sage in Chucktown. The steel player and one rhythm guitarist (not Marmaduke) were the only originals. It was just OK....but still fun hearing the old ones and remembering when country music began merging with rock---Byrds, Burrito Bros, Dead, etc

I read an article in the Sporting News back in the late 80's that Tony Rice told his high school coach (Willie Varner) to please tell Clemson that he wasn't interested and to leave him alone.Chuck Reedy who was an assistant under Ford used to be on with Kornblut once a week stated on his show that if Clemson would have signed Rice they would have won 2 national championships.

Clemson accepting prop 48 players. Not sure we could have gotten him into school. Sounds like Holtz was "reprimanded" for promising him acceptance. Happy it worked out for Rice, He seems like a nice man

The hardest to take. Danny personally recruited Tony Rice. Up until the last week before signing date, he was thought to be a Clemson lock. Lou Holtz came down and scooped him up the last week. Ford would have never talk about it but it was shady... to say the least. We would have won another National Championship with Tony Rice.
Rice had a great career at ND but he could have owned the state of SC.
