What am I missing?

Can someone with some knowledge of sports betting lines help me out? First let me preface this by saying I have little to no knowledge of how betting lines are established. The most betting I do is throwing $5 in the office NFL pool a few times each season. But my question is, how are we, according to the Burns article on the front page, considered favorites by about a touchdown? They are 4-2 and just put up twice as many points against UMD as we did. We were also favorites against TCU and they were a top-15 team in the country and we had just lost to GT. Just curious how these lines are established and what they are based on.

They are based not on a perceived outcome of the game

exactly. They are based on the idea that if equal numbers of people bet on each team, the bookie wins. So the bookies set the line to encourage people to pick one team or another. That line changes as people place bets for one team or another.
Does this make any sense?

It's pretty simple....

Vegas establishes the betting lines to create an active market for both sides of a wager.

In other words, the point spread evens out the market towards an equal number of participants on each side of the wager which allows the bookmaker (Vegas) to at least break even.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Yep, and you have to remember location as well. Teams like

Clemson and Florida get an automatic 3 to 4 points when they play at home because there is a such a home field advantage, as opposed to the flip side. If this were at Wake, they would get no more than 1 point, *maybe* 2.

Bookies don't necessarily handicap a game by who they think will win....They give the handicaps to try and keep the money even on both sides. They get the vig and don't get hurt at all that way.

The over under is a little different I am sure.

Atleaset that is my take
