Behind ENEMY Lines - UGA Keys to Win/Secondary Updates

Aug 26, 2013, 8:20 AM

Gametime is getting closer and closer!! It is hard to be sitting here at work right now. I can't wait to get to Death Valley Saturday night! With that said, here are some more UGA related articles that are logical and provide some good information from behind enemy lines!

After Reading...

#1 - It will be interesting to see just how good this Tray Matthews kid is.

#2 - I agree with his keys to a UGA victory. They have to try to quiet our crowd - something they never did against the Lamecocks.

#3 - I think Reader is a huge key to our gameplan in this one. This is his type of game.

Tray Matthews has played well above what you would expect from a true freshman. Being an EE has really helped him learn our system. Still, it's going to go right down to the wire whether he plays or not. I've heard that the combination of Fluker and Langley starting at safety is just as likely as Matthews/Norman.

UGA has been very secretive

when it comes to talking about how their secondary will line up and they have closed quite a few practices to the media so it will be interesting to see what they have worked on.

True. Matthews status changes almost every day so who knows. Any way you slice it it aint pretty. I see Swann at Star shadowing Watkins all day. IF we can get Matthews and Fluker to start at safety then I'll breathe a little easier. Even that aint optimal. A true freshman and a JUCO guy with 20 days practice at safety? Still not good. The other corner should be dawson. 3rd corner should be Wiggins, a true freshman or Johnson, another JUCO guy.

All of that sounds pretty bad until you look at each player individually. There are some fantastic athletes with great ball skills in that list. It's really just gonna be a matter of them reducing mistakes as the game progresses, cause they will make their fair share of mistakes.

Do we even know how much practice time Matthews has missed? Never good when you have to rely on a true freshman (EE or not) at safety against a QB such as Boyd. Now take away practice time. This kid is the real deal, but ... so many questions against a top ten team.

If CU can establish a running game in addition to Boyd ... well let's say, not a good thing for Georgia. This is their offensive key ... on Defense CU has to contain our running attack without opening the door down the field. That will be a chess match ...

I don't think he's practiced since Aug 7th. Yikes. I've heard Langley and Quincy Mauger are both getting a lot of reps at safety.

I think your right about this game being a chess match. In order for Venables to slow our ground game down he's going to have to put 8 in the box and then throw the kitchen sink right up the middle. If he guesses correctly more times than not I think they can get some key stops. However, Bobo is light years better than LSU's OC Studrawa. Studrawa kept calling PA after any sane man would realize that the wide splits his line was taking was allowing huge gaps for the Clemson D line. Clemsons D line was already more athletic than the LSU O line. Mett has the mobility of a statue. All of these things could have been accounted for by an astute OC. Instead he played right into Venables hands and Clemson teed off on Mett.

Thats wont happen with a Bobo offense. I think we'll stay balanced and in turn burn Venables attack-style defense. A lot.

I have tried to follow the UGA secondary situation close but I had not heard about Langley playing any safety until your comment.

Yeah he's actually a corner. But were trying to get guys back there with an eye for the ball. Figure if we cant cover all your receivers then if we get pressure and also have guys with good hands maybe we'll get a pick or 2??

I thin Clemson has to run the ball. And not just Boyd extending plays but dedicated runs from your backs. If our OLB's have to worry about maintaining their lanes, if the DL has to play their gaps, then Clemson has a great chance to win. If we win the LOS battle and stuff your run, then Jenkins and Floyd can just get after Boyd. Most folks dont realize that in Granthams defense, stopping the run or stopping the pass are secondary to harassing the QB. If Floyd and jenkins are not occupied, then they will eat Boyds lunch and their wont be time for Boyd to pick our secondary apart.

Run the ball, keep the LB's honest, keep the safeties looking and Clemson will in turn wreak havoc in our secondary.

18 rushes/119 yds (net) by our rb's vs. usuc,

Aug 26, 2013, 9:58 AM

33/262 (net) rb's vs. auburn.
the stats didn't include the bowl game, but we did ok in that one, i'm sure. i included just our 3 games vs. sec opponents as that is the only teams that play defense in football, according to sec fans. my point is, we'll be able to run against y'all, so y'all had better get plan "b" ready!

With our run D from last year ... You didn't have to go too far out on that limb ... lol

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It should be much improved this year, right?

Aug 26, 2013, 11:17 AM

Your 2nd and 3rd team D was much better, right?

Re: It should be much improved this year, right?

Aug 26, 2013, 11:28 AM

Our run D may very well be better this year. It would be hard to be worse. we didn't rotate on the line at all last year. We'll rotate a good 7 guys in and out this year. Grantham is finally getting the type bodies he needs for his defense in year 4 of his system. Herrera is much better than Ogletree at shedding blocks and holding his ground in the middle.

But it's pretty much an unknown quantity for the Clemson.
