He’s said it multiple times in the past as well as yesterday. If he’s correct, and he sounds confident in that number, then the breakdown probably goes like this:
B1G - 20 SEC - 18 BIG12 - 18
That means there’s just a few acquisitions left (6). The best of the ACC will soon get poached, leaving the rest for Group-of-5-like-status.
Clemson ain’t getting left out. The ACC is toast because leadership has been sitting on their hands while the B1G and Big12 have outworked them.

I’m with you but I will need to see it. I’m currently hearing no rumblings but what has been posted on TNet.

At this point, all three of those conferences know the ACC is all that’s left to poach and the GOR issue is staring them all in the face. I would guess there’s some collusion among the three to break up the conference at once so the ACC is dissolved and the GOR goes away. I know nothing but I’m guessing by this time next year, the move will be complete.

I'm sure it's one from each state. +1 from Alabama, Texas, Florida, and Cali.
This has me nervous.

You’re right. He did say 54. That leaves 4 teams to be poached.
I’m not sure what you mean by 1 from each state, but there’s no team in Alabama or Texas to be added and Cal and Stanford have been left in the dust.
I don’t know who #3 and #4 are. But, I’ll bet JK’s trailer that Clemson and FSU are #1 & 2.

56 dont work, needs to be 64. ND will have to be in the 64 so they need to join conference.

Clemson won't be left out. It may take some time and it will be pro ball not college, but barring a sudden collapse of the program we won't be left out of the new League.

There will be 56 teams playing elite level football. Some members of those conferences will not be included in the elite level. Football will be a separate entity. It may take a handful of years but, it will happen.

I don’t necessarily think entire conferences will be in the group of 56 that Dabo mentions. FWIW

This is correct. He said there’s still a few more steps that have to happen before we get there. 54 teams with a 16 team playoff. I’d say the number doesn’t include Vandy, Mizzou, Miss St, Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, Texas Tech, Duke, Wake and many others like that. It won’t have anything to do with current conference makeup.

get left out.
SEC 16 now, their preferences are likely as follows:
17. UNC or NC State to get the state of NC 18. UVA or Va Tech to get the state of VA 19. Florida State to keep big out of Florida 20. Clemson to get another big ratings school and power in addition to FSU 21. Miami to secure south Florida and keep the big out. 22. West Virginia has SEC atmosphere and puts SEC right at Big doorstep 23. ? 24. ?
BIG now at 18, preferences likely as follows: 19. UNC or NC State to get the state of NC 20. UVA or Va Tech to get the state of VA 21. Georgia Tech academics and plant flag in Atlanta 22. Duke to go along with UNC and academics 23. Syracuse to get the state of NY and solidify the northeast 24. ?
Yes, Notre Dame would be top preference on all list and push everyone down a spot. Yes, I know the tv model doesn't call for wanting a new state like 20112, but still the SEC and Big will want those two states of NC and VA in their footprint, especially the SEC.

Failed premise.
1. States don’t matter, TV viewership does. 2. This is being run by the networks, not the conferences. Power of the purse strings.

56 may be his guess. Teams like Louisville, VT and Nancy ST will likely join the Big 12. I would all three will end up close to 24 each

Having two or threee super conferences is just an iteration on the way to one nationwide league / conference, i.e. an NFL format of one league / conference with geographic divisions, etc. This format will generate much more money than is now generated by college football. Each college team will receive well over $100M. Right now NFL teams split $11B, i.e. $370M for each team.
It will take a few years and numerous iterations of BIG20, BIG18, etc., but at some point media folks and the potential for more dollars will overtake the egos of the SEC and BIG10 brass. The pie can be a whole lot bigger with a nationwide league and parity.
Think about the quality of the product (games) the NFL produces through the entire season. Most game are competitive, even for the top teams. In college football the top teams only play 3 to 5 competitive games each year. The tailgating is better and the girls look better at college games, but half the games suck. Yawn.
Jim Kelly nailed it ................ https://www.latimes.com/sports/ucla/story/2023-08-04/chip-kelly-college-football-realignment
We'll end up with this NFL model, but it will take a while and quite a few iterations to get there.
And yes, players will be paid. It will also take time, but they will replace NIL with a well structured compensation plan that provides a level playing field for compensation, similar to NFL. That's how we get to a competitive schedule, and a better product.
In the meantime, regardless of which league conference divsion we are in, we are going to continue recruiting studs and kicking a$$.
Go Tigers.

BIG is NOT adding Cal/Stanford. It’s already been discussed. Presidents wanted it, networks said no. No money for them, and the member schools will not pay the way for dead weight.
This works in Clemson’s favor.

18-18-18 each in 9 team divisions, no conf champs and take 6 division winners plus 6(top 4 get bys) or 10 at large teams for the playoffs (or use a CFP type selection committee). Rebalance the divisions by records every 4 years to keep them competitive.
