ATM and Mizzou SEC Question

Jul 27, 2021, 12:55 PM

What was the purpose of the SEC adding Mizzou a few years ago, what did they bring to the table? I understand ATM offers benefits, but what was the incentive for Mizzou?

Once the SEC added ATM, they had to get one more to balance out the divisions. So, Missouri was available.

Originally, Missouri wanted to join the Big 10. But the Big 10 didn't want them. Like Colorado & Nebraska & ATM, they wanted to get away from Texas. So, the SEC took them in.

It did add St Louis & Kansas City TV markets to the SEC. Not sure how much that was worth.

I understand the need to maintain balance in the divisions, but just don't see a lot of reward with Missouri. I can think of other schools that may have made more sense for one reason or another. At that time the dynamics could have been much different and I'm unaware of how that played a role but still a head scratcher?

You are correct, its all about the money. And in this case those two big TV markets played a key role in their invitation. The SEC has strategically grown their conference. They have done it state by state, tv market by tv market. They wanted UNC really bad a few years ago and UNCheat said no thanks.

Kansas City and St Louis are both about 2.5-3 million. Combined, they are the size of Atlanta or Dallas Fort Worth but since Columbia (Mizzou) is in the center, they likely carry well in both markets and BOTH of those markets basically stretch into another state. Illinois and Kansas. It is a nice moderately sized TV market and they are the "only" school (no team in St Louis now), it was a good pickup. The B10 likely would have been a slightly better fit as I bet even Illinois has a minor pull in St. Louis (Like Maryland in NoVa), but Mizzou is not complaining.
