were spent at Simon & Schuster. It was an absolutely toxic environment. I'd have left after a year if I wasn't so #### stubborn. I'm not saying there weren't any good people there, but most just kept their heads down while some sold out any personal virtue to thrive in a culture of backstabbing.

The guy who created that environment was #### Snyder. When he was fired after Paramount bought the company (for spending lavishly on himself), rather than resetting the culture, the "company" just sort of collectively moved forward as if the model that he created by was the correct one and absolutely nothing changed.

While I try to be a forgiving guy, the exception I make is with just about anything related to S&S. When the CEO who made my professional life miserable, for reasons having nothing to do with job performance, dropped dead, I smiled. And when this popped up in my news feed. OMG - Schadenfreude!

I'm seeking out more juicy details - though some of the stuff in the article (re: his health) is pretty gross.

An old colleague told me he had long ago disinherited the son from whom he was estranged, and now that guy is stuck footing the bill for this deplorable guy.

He was universally loathed. At S&S (which is in Rock Center) be had an elevator that went only to his office. He had a personal chef there, too. When Paramount bought the company he almost immediately gave an interview announcing to the publishing world that he was staying - you'd have thought S&S bought Paramount. I think they sh!tcanned him within a week.

When I was at Random House (largely a very good place to work and intolerant of nonsense like this) there were a couple of S&S people who came over through the years and you could see the bad habits they had taken from working for Synder.
