As a former player this national championship is truly special

Dec 12, 2021, 5:23 PM

I didn’t play for Clemson, my roommate did, but I played on the Clemson club team and played competitively for 17 years. Mike Noonan is the best college soccer coach I’ve ever seen and his team totally get to the game. Coach Ibrahim, the coach when I was at Clemson, was awesome, but the game has evolved and Noonan it is on top of it. 30 years ago really you just put your best athletes on the field, but college soccer now you have to have players who really understand their role and the ebb and flow of offense vs defense. Clemson’s players were excellent at shadowing, Squaring shoulders on defense, And not “over playing” the ball. It was a thing of beauty. They completely outclassed Washington, who were mainly just “ball beaters” And quite frankly on some of their set plays of Free kinks, I think I could’ve done better with my opposite foot. Just embarrassing

Some of you on here have been putting down the sport, and I just feel for you. It’s not as straightforward and simple as football, baseball and baseball. You may balk at that, but I played all three of those sports and had the rules and objectives understood by age 10. With soccer, since the game is constantly in motion you have to have a vision to set up a play on the fly And communicate both verbally and nonverbally with your teammates in order to score or defend. Your attention can never waiver from the moment, or you are toast. If you’ve never played, I can certainly understand how it just looks like chaos or “kickball”. I didn’t really understand the complex nuances of the sport until I was a senior in high school.

Congratulations soccer fit ballers, what a special moment.

Thank you. I only know a smidgen of what y'all know but it's darn hard to win a soccer natty. Especially when 2 of your matches were penalties. Awesome, awesome feat and with key players out.

Couldn't be prouder as the tears continue to flow. I didn't play but I remember going to the ones in the 80's. Thanks again for your excellent breakdown of the game.

I grew up playing soccer and loved it. My only regret in trying different sports was not taking up golf at a younger age.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

I was more of a 'in the shadows' kind of operative.

and BTW,
I was treasurer because most of them were too lazy or too high to dew reliable maff.
