A few years ago, little Gardner-Webb had one of the best, if not the best player in college basketball. You will need to be an old timer like me to remember this big man.

He was a good one. Several years in the NBA.double figure scorer for two or three teams. Early 70s I think

Yes he was. I think he was late 60’s bumping up to 1970.

Artis Gilmore played at Jaxsonville University. Was Gardner-Webb a JUCO back then? Not sure if Gilmore played JUCO or not.

Gardner Webb had another player who played several years in the NBA. I think his name was John Drew, but I'm probably wrong on that.

Yes. Gardner-Webb was a junior college back then.***

You're right. He was an absolute stud. Could shoot the bottoms out.

I'm an old-timer too. I graduated from Gardner-Webb in 1977 after it became a 4 year school in 1971. Artis Gilmore played his first two years there in the late 60s under Coach Eddie Holbrook, then transferred to Jacksonville where he and another 7 footer named Pembrook Burrows led Jacksonville to the national championship game where they lost to UCLA. Jacksonville's coach was Joe Williams, who later coached at Furman when Clyde Mayes and Moose Leonard where great players and they went to the NCAA tournament. Gardner-Webb also had a player in the mid-seventies named John Drew who went to the Atlanta Hawks and was runner-up for NBA rookie of the year. He played 11 seasons, mostly with the Hawks. At that time, Gardner-Webb was consistently one of the best basketball teams in the country every year and always ended up in Kansas City playing in the NAIA National Championship Tournament.
