dethatching, probably would be better off aerating with a plug aerator. I'd try to wait until the grass is actively growing though.

As a few others have mentioned it would be more beneficial to aerate, Unless you have zoysia. When you aerate you are basically breaking up the thatch layer anyway while also breaking up compaction and allowing gas exchange to happen with the roots. The best time to do this is late May while the grass is actively growing. Core aeration does a lot of good it also damages the plant some by slicing the roots and the crown of the plant. The plant will heal a lot faster when we are in the growing season. Hope that helps

They def do a good job of that. Look for a product called Aloft or acelepryn both will give you all year control of the moles food source which will send them to the neighbors.

a good mulching blade keeps the clippings small, even if you don't have a bagger. Now, I've always had fescue, so every fall when I aerate/overseed/fertilize/lime... I'm going to rip the yard up good with that core aerator anyway. Just never had a thatch problem, but I'm sure other grass varieties in different climates are probably different...

that's how my dad, granddad, etc got rid of thatch. We used to have big old Saturday "burn parties" when I was growing up, the local neighbors would come over to help. Station folks around with rakes to put out the frisky offshoots before they got out of control. Then we'd go to the next person's house to light their yard up.
I never have done it myself though. I don't think the govt overlords even permit stuff like this any more.

I remember those days with my grandads burning off the yards. Good memories but it's probably strictly forbidden in most places now. Anyhow, it sure was something I looked forward to as a kid!

I have a mixed green yard. Some Bermuda, bahia (highway grass), some zoyzia, some fescue, some monkey grass, some clover, and some centipede. Half of my yard used to be pasture land. No dethatching for me, just cut it and kill fire-ant hills. That's about all I do.
