Anti virus question

Sep 19, 2015, 5:24 PM

My Kaspersky AV subscription is ending. Should I stick w them or is there something better and cheaper I should consider. Thanks for serious responses

Avast Antivirus is free and is really good. Also Malwarebytes.

Free. Though the main one I use is Avast. Malwarebytes I keep on the PC for routine scanning, as a backup.

Just spray some Windex on it every few weeks***

I still just us Microsoft Security Essentials. I think it is included in win8.1 and 10. For Windows 7 and earlier you have to download. 3rd party paid virus apps are not worth it unless you have a business need, and they tend to cause more problems than they prevent. I used AVG for a while until they started sending occasional pop-ups. They are probably still decent.

Never actually had a virus or trojan. Avoiding risky sites on the net is the best security. Also Firefox + noscript + adblock prevents 99% of malicious stuff.

WebRoot secure anywhere. Price is right, gets good reviews, not a resource hog, includes malware protection and seems to do its job

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes.

Sep 19, 2015, 5:35 PM

Do not pay for virus protection.

1. use Firefox or Chrome with extensions like ad-block
2. use 'AVG Free' with Firefox or Chrome browser extensions

But it comes with the ultimate virus, apple os. :)

No problems with virus on any of our pcs. We use ms security essentials. Kapersky is a pain.

You know you've raised a real tiger fan when you ask your son what he wants his cub scout pinewood derby car to be and he says a Tiger!

haha, it's not even called Apple os....

Sep 19, 2015, 5:58 PM

But hey keep on risking identity theft, and malware and viruses with grossly over rated Microsoft products

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, Windows has surpassed Mac OS now

Sep 19, 2015, 6:01 PM

I'm a Linux guy, so I don't really have a horse in this battle. Mac OS has been going downhill since Snow Leopard. Been getting slower, more bloated, and less secure.

I know. Os x or whatever the current version. Identity theft, malware, etc. are risks on both platforms if you aren't smart. Apple makes great products but I don't like the apple ecosystem. To each his own.

My computer science son recommends Avast. Clemson University uses Trend Micro.

Webroot is the best I've used, it costs but it also doesn't take up space on your pc. Easy breezy.

Sep 19, 2015, 7:17 PM

adblock and you really don't need antivirus anyway. run spybot S&D about once a month too and ccleaner to keep junk files cleaned up
