Welcome Tiger Fans - A User Guide to College Station -
Jun 1, 2018, 11:27 AM

It's been a while Clemson fans.... First off, congrats on the 2016 Natty. I was happy for you guys. I'm looking forward to your fan base making the trip back to College Station. We have a fairly large group of CU fans we met in 2004/2005 that will be making the trip again, and we plan to come back again next year.
I try to put this together every year for traveling fans, so your trip to College Station is as easy as possible. Here's my take on how to maximize your fun in College Station. Keep in mind, I am in my mid 30s, so it skews more towards the Night life and tailgating than the fine dining and sight seeing.
A few notes worth mentioning. Northgate is the Entertainment District in College Station. It's a 7-8 block area with 50+ bars and a number restaurants that sits on University Avenue right across from campus. West Campus is where Reed Arena, Olsen Field and the REC Center sit and a large swath of tailgating takes place in this area. This is where 90% of the RVs are parked.
Restaurants in College Station worth visiting: Republic Steakhouse -- Fantastic selection of bourbon and whiskeys. One of the best steakhouses in SE Texas. You would need to make reservations here. Cafe Eccell -- Personally, my favorite for the price. It's a nice dinner, but not extravagant in price. They have great handcrafted cocktails and wood fired pizzas. Napa Flats Christopher's -- More fine dining. Torchy's Tacos -- Leave the bar after a big night, find yourself here. Freebird's -- On Northgate, large burritos West End Elixir -- On Northgate, new place with unique cocktails and great food. Koppe Bridge -- Best Burgers in town. Grub Burger Bar Hullabaloo Diner -- Featured on the Food Channel. Extremely dirty (in a good way) and delicious breakfast. Sodolaks - Comfort Food Fuego -- Tacos! Café Capri -- artisan mix The Proudest Monkey Fargo's BBQ -- Rated the #2 BBQ joint in Texas
? Northgate: Bar District (I'll just go West to East down University for the ones I've frequented) West End Elixir -- See above Chimy's -- Deadly Margarita and Tequila selection. Fun porch and always a great place to cap off your night. Bar 12 -- Rooftop porch, two level bar. Shiner Park -- Dance Club O'Bannons -- Irish Pub with great beer selection Paddock Lane -- Same as O'Bannons Northgate Food Truck Alley -- Explains itself with craft brew trucks Tipsy Turtle -- New Orleans Style Daquiri Bar The Backyard -- One of my favorites. Chilled liquor on tap and tons of games on the back porch (Beer pong, washers, darts, etc). 2 story and has a La Bodega Taco Bar in here too. Great craft Tequila shakers Dry Bean Saloon -- Shot saloon with 200 different shots on the menu Dixie Chicken -- College Station staple since 1974. I'd have one drink here at least. It will be slammed on Friday nights. Dudley's -- The Chicken's less country brother Madhatters -- 80s bar with cheap, STRONG drinks Basil Whippets -- The "Apothecary Lounge" Corner Bar -- Another one of my favorites. Three stories, with a large open air rooftop bar overlooking campus Hookah Lounge -- Hookah bar that serves drinks Foundation -- Dance Club Kyoto Sake Bar -- Name explains itself. All sake/sake bombs all the time. Gatsbys -- Dance Club Logie's -- Huge beers with a porch looking at inner Northgate Rebel Draft House -- Tons of beers and large with a wrap around porch. Rough Draught Bourbon Bar -- Top shelf bourbon, whiskey, scotch bar. They flavor balls of ice for their old fashion drinks. It's good. Cedar Lane -- Try a "wake me up"... Big Greek Crowd Blackwater Draw -- Local microbrew that serves food. Hurricane Harry's -- Dance Hall (Country centric) Murphy's Irish Pub The Canteen -- Attached to the George Hotel World of Beer - Over 100 beers on Tap ? Tailgating: You'll get differing opinions on this depending on the age and tastes of the Aggie fan, so I'm going to throw all options out here.
West Campus -- This is where I tailgate and prefer. I'd suggest getting there early, and either dropping your stuff off around Reed Arena (in the grass) or around the parking garage (in the grass) and parking somewhere further out on West Campus in the pay lots. West Campus is a mix of all types, but tends to be the best collection of parties on campus. We tailgate at Reed Arena in the grass looking at the Baseball and Softball field. It is in the grass at the corner of Tom Chandler and Olsen Blvd in the link below. We have a blow up 12th Man guy, 1000+ square feet of shade and a full wet bar so stop by and drink some on us. You can drop your stuff off starting at noon on Friday.
As you know by now, the game is at 6 pm. We will be out there at 6 am (when lots open) but I'd suggest getting situated by no later than 10-11am if you want a spot on West Campus or Spence. If you just want to roll a cooler around, our fan base is a relatively friendly bunch that will offer plenty of food and drink.
The RV lots here are at Reed Arena, Olsen Field, George Bush Library, across from the intramural fields and the Steam Building. http://transport.tamu.edu/Parking/maps/RV/RV.pdf
Here is the overall parking map. http://transportmap.tamu.edu/parkingmap/tsmap.htm?map=ft
Spence Park -- This is the park on the East Side of the stadium. Tends to be a mix of families and students/Greek. You can't park anywhere around here, but you can drop off starting at noon on Friday. It's another good mix of students and alum, but you can't have the big trailers in Spence. You have to power up your tailgate through batteries. Again, a nice place that's fun, just a little more of a hassle to set up up and pick up.
Cain Park -- This is the Reserved tailgating. A little less rowdy and more corporate, but crowded nonetheless.
Pay Lots -- The Pay lots are on the periphery of campus and not nearly as crowded as inner campus tailgating. If you want a quieter area, this is your place, but if you're anything like me, you don't come all this way to not mix it up with the locals. ?
Golf: Traditions Club -- A&M Golf Team home course and a Nicklaus course. The Stella Hotel borders this course and has 3 bars in it (one is a speakeasy style) and two separate restaurants and cabanas poolside. Miramont -- Private RTJ course A&M on campus course -- I actually like this course since it's been redone. Bryan Muni -- Haha.... no. ? Sights and Sounds -- George Bush Library -- 41s Presidential Library on West Campus. RV Field parking is right beside it. Bonfire Memorial -- On the NorthEast Side of campus recognizing the 1999 tragedy. Messina Hof Winery -- Local winery in Bryan. I love it here at dusk..
? If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I think we always have a chance, especially at home and at night in front of 104k.
This team doesn't lack talent, what they lacked under Sumlin, was an accountable culture. Sumlin was soft and didn't apply standards equally. He very rarely could adjust at halftime. See UCLA (up 44-10 and then poof). See Bama in any number of years minus the Johnny years. See LSU every #### year.
Just go look at our draft picks over the last 7 years. Talent has never been an issue, much like for Clemson leading up to Dabo.
Where I think we have a large disadvantage against Clemson is our OLine against your DLine. It isn't that we don't have the hogs, its that this will only be the 2nd year of an intact OLine that has played together before. I don't worry about our DLine going against your OLine. That's our deepest and most talented position on the team. I would actually say RB would come in 2nd regarding team units with LB 3rd.
If I had to handicap the odds, I'd put A&M winning at 20% and I'd put the line at 9 points. So yeah, I do think we can win, but it will take a great performance from our OLine.

Didn't predict a win, but sports are a fickle beast.
I also look back and say, Clemson is good for two poor showings a year. Sometimes they eek them out (NCSU), sometimes they don't (Pitt).
We will see.

Y'all looked great against Bama on D last year but against WF it was just sad. What should we expect? Why such a difference in those games?

Injuries. We were depleted to the bone at the end of the year.
One pass away from tying Bama with under 5 to go. That was a great night in Kyle outside of the final result.

I do think we win, but you nailed it on those two huge disappointments. Your Aggies will be facing a real beast vs this Tiger team, especially if we play a QB who can maximize our receiver talent. Hopefully for us we learned a huge lesson in the AL game. If not, you may indeed have a chance. I do plan on attending with my wife, and we are looking forward to the trip.

Thanks for visiting and posting all the info. I went in 2004 and had a great time, even though our Tigers didn't. I can still feel that cannon shot on my chest when the Aggies scored, which they did often that night.
I enjoyed the Dixie Chicken, and would recommend this trip to any Tiger fans.
I found interesting your comment about getting rid of Sumlin in part to get a culture of accountability. I've got some bad news...you won't get that with Jimbo.
Jimbo can recruit at a very high level, and he's done great work with some of his QBs (Jamarcus Russell). I think he's a heck of a play caller too. His NFL-style offense will attract some great players.
In my opinion, FSU has fallen off largely due to a lack of accountability in the program. 911 calls in Tallahassee were diverted to the athletic complex, and there have been special rules for special players (Jamies Winston). This started under Bobby Bowden, but Jimbo let this continue and it hurt. I don't understand how he let their offensive line get so bad in the past few years. Clemson really beat up the Seminoles at Line of Scrimmage in the last 2-3 meetings, and that isn't the norm.
The Aggies have a shot to beat us this year, especially if our offense isn't in sync yet. I expect our Defense to tip things in our favor, but this game will be tough.
Best of luck to the Aggies this year (outside Sept 8 of course).

We do.
And to answer your statement regarding Johnny & Jimbo.... Fair enough, but I'm not sure why you are broad brushing an entire fan base for it. And I'll respectfully disagree on Jimbo being a scumbag. I think its easy to call anyone who has coached at Free Shoes U a dirty person.

I'll be sure to consult you on all character references going forward!
Oh boy, here goes the BBQ fight that was looming... Let me preface this by saying
1) My brother and sister finished high school in the SE so I became exposed to pork, pork and more pork. I liked it, but wasn't a huge fan of the runny sauces in Eastern Tennessee.
2) I love fatty brisket, jalapeno sausage, smoked chicken and burnt ends. I realize that is a Texas (up to KC) thing. I love the spicier, thick sauces (see Stubbs as a more national brand). Always have to have potato salad (brown mustard, not the bland crap), baked beans, collard greens and cream corn.

Here is the Jimbo issue in a nutshell
Jun 1, 2018, 12:17 PM
|
|
He is not a top shelf coach, if he was he would've had more success at FSU other than only when Winston was there which opens another can of worms. Jimbo never punished Winston, or anyone else for that matter, for his behavior which was questionable at the least. The only reason he gave that one QB has walking papers was because it was on video and he could not side step it. That kid and many more at FSU were in constant trouble with the law and he stood there and enabled them rather than holding them responsible because he wanted the team to succeed rather than the young men grow into good people.
I have little to no respect for Jimbo and yes, you guys over paid in a big way for a coach tat I do not believe will live up to the money you are paying him!

values winning above developing character in the young men he's supposed to be coaching.
Also, BBQ is pork. Brisket is brisket. There are only so many chances I can give you here, and I have been far more generous than normal.

Horse ####.
BBQ originated from putting anything over an open flame. Beef, pork, fish, etc.
I think we can both laugh that Yankees call having a BBQ, grilling burgers and brats.

Brisket is not pork and therefore brisket is not BBQ. Did that help? Was that helpful?

you won't have to worry about your star players missing any significant playing time for violation of team rules. There are no team rules and the few that may seem to exist on the surface for appearance sake, aren't enforced or are used to get rid of seldom-used reserve players low on the depth chart in order to fee up scholarships for the next recruiting cycle.
Of course, being in the $EC you're probably already accustomed to that.
It will be interesting to see if the A&M administration also has the local police and judges in their hip pocket and if they are as good at covering-up delinquent conduct as the FSU administration was.

Where can I find boiled peanuts in College Station? Do you have an opinion on whether we should start Kelly Bryant or Trevor Lawrence? Do you care where John Bell ends up playing football? (cause I don’t)

Boiled Peanuts are not a Texas thing, but I believe Saltgrass and Sodolaks do them here locally.
I'd start KB. Golden Hair Jesus, I'm not sure of yet. He looks the part, but it would be a risk IMO.
I do not.

Thank you so very much for the guide!! We have never been to college station and are so excited to be heading there in a few months!
We are flying, so won’t have any of our tailgate gear with us. What suggestions do you have for those of us who will be sans tailgate stuff?
We don’t yet have our tickets either and could quite possibly have to get them there or on a secondary market. Do you have any experience with buying tickets onsite or are there sites like tigernet there where one can get legit tickets?

I'd suggest Ubering to West Campus (Reed Arena) in the morning with a rolling cooler, and I 100% guarantee you, you will be invited to tailgates and fed drink and food.
I'd go to TexAgs.com and go to their ticket exchange board. There will be posts there for parking/game tickets.
If not, I'd suggest buying as close to game time as you can. It's going to be a SRO crowd.

Have several drinks on Northgate until 1130-1140. Walk across University (its a 10-15 minute walk) to the stadium before midnight.

Thanks for the kind words and information. You're a nice person. We look forward to being in College Station and putting a whupping on your Aggies.
I have to talk about said whupping because...those are the rules.
Texas A&M is a great program and I myself was particularly please at the whuppings ya'll put on the SEC when you joined that hail-hole conference. It was a lovely thing to watch.
You've got Jimbo now and although we don't like him, he's a step up from Sumlin. I respect Sumlin but somehow he just didn't have that 'it' factor so necessary to winning Nattys.
Jimbo does, but for the next 2 years he's gotta go through Dabo and Brent. Dabo and Brent are Kryptonite for Jimbo soo....see aforementioned #### whupping.
Thanks for your kindness on this board. We don't have to be animals to be fans and can treat each other with respect. Except for Francis Marion and CuTigerbob. You have to watch out for them. If you walk outside and see your garbage can turned upside down and your dog is pregnant....you know Francis and Bob have been there.
Good luck with your season. I hope you win out after you recover from the Tigers beat down.

Wow, that’s a lot of information. Do you provide that for all your guest or are we special?
You must be a Journalism major or liberal arts major. All the engineers on this site don’t put that much detail in our posts. ??

Magnolia, where are you? We are asking more questions and getting no response. That didn’t take long to get kicked to the curb. I thought we were special.

Oh, I see. Now back to my first question. Do you provide all this information to all visitors? Sounds like an awesome place btw.
How about last year’s game against the chickens? Did they show their true redneck feathers when they came to town?

Only to the fan bases I like.
USCe fans are mostly harmless on the road. No issues. It's Columbia where I've had my run-ins, but they are largely non-violent #### talking contests. I've found USCe fans to be peculiar, in that, they really don't know much about CFB outside of the SEC and USC.
I enjoyed the #### out of the 2014 game in Columbia, but I'll have a hard time going back simply because...
a) Columbia isn't that exciting b) It's a ##### getting there from our neck of the woods. (Fly to Charlotte and drive).

You can either
a) Fly to Bush in Houston and drive the 85 miles. b) Connect in Houston and fly to Easterwood (Airport in CS) c) Fly to Austin and drive the 90 miles. d) Connect in Austin and fly to Easterwood

Probably would put UTEP and Texas State at 8 and 9. We'd round out the Top 10.

Thanks for the information! I'll be making the trip down from Denver and I'm definitely looking forward to it. As one of the 3 states who have them, I can attest Torchy's Tacos are fantastic and would highly recommend a trip to any of my Clemson brethren.
