Angels Envy and expansion

Jul 26, 2021, 1:35 PM

While enjoying a glass of Angels Envy and watching the Olympics last night, an idea began to form. I realize the desire to add ND and PSU and WVU but why stop there? GA cant be happy playing AU and BAMA every year so why not try to poach them? Tenn has a huge following and would be a better draw for ratings. If you begin to think “better” why not OSU and Mich. I am only suggesting teams that elevate the ratings hence contracts and ignoring personal animosity. Is this possible? I don't know as I am only tossing it out for debate. One thing the 45 Th President did to NATO was to force them to pony up money for defense spending. Maybe the way to become competitive is for all ACC members is to agree to spend x amount on football/baseball/basketball programs or get out. Lastly my second glass of Angels Envy brought me to a second scenario: If you want quality academics, football centric schools, tv ratings, expand recruiting footprint merge pac 12 with acc. A true National conference with an east and west division. Again, I don't know if feasible/possible or Angels Envy but I offer it up for debate.

You won't offend me by disagreeing but I do ask for logical arguments why or why not.

I would support either of those actions, but neither is

feasible. No one is going to leave the B1G to join the ACC or the ACPCC. And if we merge with the PAV bur operate like two separate conferences, what have we accomplished?

I would say leave the conferences in place for other sports, but ignore conference affiliations for football. A pod structure that cuts across conference lines, and ultimately produces 8 playoff participants. Payouts could still be based on performance as a conference, but participation and scheduling would have nothing to do with conference. Schools like Kansas, Vandy and Wake would remain members of their conferences for all other sports, but they may not be included in the pod structure every year. There would be an element of relegation and promotion, as the system would not have a place for all of the current P5 programs. In another post, I laid out a structure where 80 teams from current P5 and G5 would be broken into 8, 10-team pods, play a round robin pod format (with up to 3 non-pod games), and the 8 pod champs would go to the playoff. PODS could be made up on a geographic basis, or you could use some other method, like the top 8 from one season acting as team captains and "drafting" pods for the next season. Would make for a lot of non-traditional matchups. I know there are a number of difficult issues that would have to be addressed, but I wish the powers that be would consider something like this. CFP, are you listening?
