Commonly used phrases, axioms or metaphorical sayings that annoy you.

Here, I'll start:

'Waiting on the other shoe to drop'

What the deuce? I mean, who cares who dropped a shoe? And assuming whoever did is bipedal, how does waiting for them to drop the other equate to some sense of dreadful anticipation?

rooming houses were common, and one could hear everything in the surrounding rooms. You would hear the guy above you getting into bed, and one shoe would hit the floor. You know it wont be quiet until the second one does.
