That's not what he's doing. He's trying to out-Trump Trump.

The idea that he is trying to highlight the absurdity of Trump's style implies that he thinks supporters of Trump will realize this and learn from it. No one believes that Newsom thinks that. What he is trying to do is get high-fives from his base for standing up to Orange Man. In other words, he's not a better person than Trump, and Americans must suffer more childishness from their elected leaders.
There are no adults in the room, sadly.

This satire has a target audience of one. People who understand that one person know he doesn’t understand satire and this will keep him up at least one night ranting and raving. If Newsom gets aggressive and starts putting something like this out every single day, JD will be president by December.

but that's obviously not who or what Newsom is. I didn't much care for it at first, but I've warmed to the idea of somebody who is supposed to be in a serious role displaying how absurdly the man in the most powerful position in the world actually acts on social media in particular, by doing exactly what the President does. And worse, how we've all just accepted it as normal behavior.

It IS who he is, because he IS doing it. His supporters ARE celebrating it.

He's doing it to rally his supporters around him, prove he can stand toe-to-toe with Trump in a social media smackdown. And he has been doing it for some time now. He has contributed to the national discussion in a childish, undignified way. But there's no "Hey man, just kidding". It's done.
I get it. I know a lot of you don't care because he's not Trump...he's just acting like Trump. The act, to me, is the man. If he saw leadership as a role to honor, he would honor it.

a campaign run at the big seat. But how many people before him have attempted to battle Trump by acting like an adult, and wilted under Trump's childish insults and twitter diarrhea? It simply doesn't work, and doesn't resonate, even a little, with the 30M MAGAs who lap that shit up. Those people aren't voting for Newsom under any circumstances, but millions of independents and centrist voters need to be reminded that what Trump has been doing for the past decade is absolutely not normal and not acceptable, and we've all allowed it to become the new baseline for behavior.

But that's not what millions of independents and centrist voters are doing.

Millions of independents and centrist voters already know that what Trump has been doing for the past decade is absolutely not normal and not acceptable, and looked forward to voting for decency and dignity in the next election. And Newsom is saying "That's not me! I'm the guy that can out-Trump Trump!" Meanwhile millions of liberal voters are reposting his tweets, high fiving and yucking it up about sticking it to Trump.
So...it's just more of Trump.
Obviously I'm in the minority here, so all good. I foresaw this upcoming election as a battle between garbage morality (MAGA) vs policies I disagree with but with some dignity and respect for the role of leadership, domestically and internationally (Democrat) . Newsom gives me that "stay home again in 2028" vibe. Perhaps you all are right and I'm wrong, and Newsom will impressively pull up from the nose dive to the bottom that he has engaged in.

but Newsom is merely acting like Trump on social media. He's not governing like Trump, renaming departments and bodies of water or subverting the Constitution on a weekly basis, so it's hard to say he's out-Trumping Trump in the real world.
It's an act, as opposed to Trump who legitimately believes everything that comes out of his own fingers or mouth.

Unfortunately, the glass ceiling has been broken. We now elect convicted felons whose debate strategies are to accuse minorities of eating cats and dogs and grant pardons to those who beat police officers with hockey sticks. The chits not going back in the horse.
