If the “Middle Eight” is important, then don’t win the toss and take the ball.

You should always defer. The “middle eight” is the only time you can have back to back drives without a turnover.

I suppose there is some validity to the idea of getting the ball and scoring right away, but I think there is much more of a psychological benefit to deferring then immediately forcing a “three & out”!
