Although I 100% want out of the ACC, I have to ask this.....

May 24, 2012, 8:14 AM

With the exception of one season, Clemson has been in the ACC Atlantic Division hunt every year since 2005. A few plays or call going the other way and we are in the ACC title game more than we have been. In short, as an ACC team, we are just about always going to be near the top of the league.....

If we are to be honest with ourselves, should we move to either the Big 12 or SEC, we have to accept the fact that we may not always be in the same competitive place as we are now. I would expect for us to eventually be at a point that perhaps Oklahoma State and Arkansas are in their respective leagues......The fact of the matter is that there are just more good teams that can compete for the league crown that the ACC has.

What we will get out of the exodus is a heck of a lot more money which keeps us competitive on the recruiting lanes and the ability to have superior facilities and top name coaches that we can afford. We will also have the pleasure of having incredible games to be seen at the valley and on the road against great programs nearly every week.

The fact of the matter is that for a few years we may slide back to 6-8 win seasons if their is a lot of parity and are us fans patient enough for the adjustment period to ride it out?.........I know I am. Are you?

We will have to step up our game. We may take a few lumps, but Clemson should never back down from a challenge!

I agree completely...just asking***

We will dominate the Big 12 within 5 years. Our only competition is UT and OU. I ain't skerred....

Agreed! If we're fielding a great team that's capable of

being the best in the land for a given season, then we should be able to take care of business on the field regardless of who we're playing week in and week out. I'm more concerned about the vast majority of years where we're really good but not great, and have lasting memories of great games being played in the Valley and away during the season. Bring on the competition, don't hide from it.

The more teams that are in the mix ...

May 24, 2012, 8:20 AM

the more difficult it will be to have success year after year ... that's why the 16 team superconferences won't last ... gravy will be spread too thin.

I'd rather see us play up to Big XII competition, than play

May 24, 2012, 8:22 AM

down to ACC mediocrity.

Exactly! A loss to OU or UT is much better than a crazy

May 24, 2012, 8:50 AM

loss to Maryland or Duke. Ughhhh. 2004, we beat #10 Miami in OT. Remember what happened the following week?

Yes. And it sickens me. A loss to UT/OU I can live with. A loss to Dook? Wake? Never. We should (in theory) never lose to these schools. Ever.

Honestly, I think the move would open us up to even more great recruiting grounds. We have great facilities as is, and only improving. We have fantastic coaches. I think we can be a perennial power in the Big12. Now I'm not saying we walk in the door and beat everyone. But within a few years we can be well respected in the league.

The ACC will not always be down. If we leave, so be it. There is parity across the board, with a few notable exceptions. $$$ is not the answer for everything. Just look at ND. They are filthy rich and practically irrelevant in college football. They do have many delusional fans, just like the 2 big powerhouse football teams in SC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we would definitely go back to mediocrity for about a decade

May 24, 2012, 8:48 AM

until we made a big name hire at coach but thats the price of playing in a upper tier conference.

the best solution would be for the football programs in the ACC to get back to where they were..I dont know how you do that...but Miami, FSU, GT, BC, Clemson, and Virginia Tech should be infinitely better than they are now.

That way our regional rivalries aren't lost and we can all travel to games

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ehhh...Something drastic would have to happen like

May 24, 2012, 8:53 AM

losing all of our coaches in the same year and having all juniors and seniors leaving for the draft in that same year for that to happen. 4 years TOPS for slump.

Go back to 1992

May 24, 2012, 11:04 AM

USC is considering an offer from the SEC and could have easily said, "we shouldn't go because we will get our teeth kicked in every game by the likes of Auburn, UT, FLorida, Alabama, etc.". Now 20 years later do you think they would have regretted that decision knowing now how being in the SEC has breathed life into their programs/school?

Clemson can compete with anyone. Will we win them all? Nope, but we certainly shouldn't be scared to compete at the highest level and truly see where we stand.

Your competitive chances within your league won't change...

May 24, 2012, 11:33 AM

Currently, the 2 programs that have the ability to out-recruit the rest of the ACC are Miami & FSU. When they're on their game, the rest of us are toast, including Clemson. When they're not on their game, we all have a shot. I consider VPI's situation to be more a testament to their coaching than anything structural.

If you join the Big 12 with FSU, the only programs that will have an inherent advantage over Clemson will be Texas, OU & FSU. The rest of that conference is really not a step up from the ACC in terms of football potential.

So, you guys will go from a conference where you have 2 programs that can out-recruit everyone to 3 programs. I don't see that as much of a shift in competitiveness for Clemson.

I see the ACC & the Big 12 as having very similar potential. The difference is that more Big 12 teams have gotten it done in recent years because of coaching, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

but if we are in a division with fsu, gt, vatech, wvu, miami

May 24, 2012, 12:25 PM

etc, it won't be much if any different than what we deal with now, as far as our division goes...

now beating ok, texas, etc, that may be a different story
