HVAC system today.
There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that I enjoy more than spending more than I paid for two years at Clemson on a device that does nothing more than maintain the status quo of comfort that 99.9% of Americans are accustomed to. The only thing better would be if I could drop $10k on a new roof to maintain my status of not getting wet when it rains.

Story time.
Tickle_It's dad bought a condo in Clempson since Tickle_it and his sister (no pigs) boff went to school there over the period of 6 years. Twas cheaper than paying rent. After Tickle_it graduated (I'm the youngest) he sold that condo. Bout a month or 2 later, hot water heater busted and drained completely out. It was on the Turd floor. Ruint that condo and the ones below. Lutz on them.

The elements are stupid easy to change... the zinc anodes are stupid easy to change. Both repairs are crazy cheap and easy. Other than that... it's just a tank. Dang thing should last an eternity.

Make sure to the highest seer rating you can get. That way you can at least brag about it to an extent, and feel like you're helping the earth with your efficiency (You're not you scum).
The only, AND I MEAN ONLY, good thing about when I had to replace both upstairs and downstairs units is at least they are quieter now. That silence sure is worth the 10 G's I had to drop to attain it.

I'm going 13 Seer for four reasons.......
Dec 1, 2020, 9:07 AM
|
|
1) It's cheaper 2) No dual-stage compressors and variable speed blowers = more reliable tried and true parts and cheaper parts prices if I'm still here when the warranty runs out. 3) I probably won't be in this house when the warranty runs out so the higher Seer will never pay for itself. 4) It's cheaper

5) Screw this efficiency crap. I'd buy a unit that ran on coal and ozone layer if it saved me $750 off the top.

This is a little kneejerk because it's 26 degrees here this morn and no heat sucks but I wanted time to compare the humidifier and air purifier options and see how they played with the various smart thermostats (which I'm also comparing----thinking about landing on an Ecobee or Sensi)

all the complicated mechanical stuff is no good....
the coils, tubing, etc. all gets thinner to be more efficient and therefore will definitely fail or leak sooner. You can't beat good old American Iron. You're better off with something built in a shop like this:

the outside unit was twice as big, which made for less wind noise. Earlier this yr, replaced the whole upstairs system, and even though it's much less capacity, the outside unit was even bigger. These 2 are down below a master bedroom window, and that noise reduction was so worth it. Inside units are quieter too. And I replaced the return grill with an upgrade that is really quiet. Winning.

I bought 21 SEER units for upstairs and downstairs, and the coils went out in both of them before the warranty was out. Still had to pay for labor and refrigerant, even under warranty. These are Lennox units, by the way.
I'm hearing the same thing for refrigerators; the coils are crap and will not last more than 2-3 years. If you have an older refrigerator, it is best if you try to keep it running, or make sure you get the extended warranty on a new one.

Refrigerator warranty

When I bought new hi-end Frigidaire French door w/ water & ice through the door, plus matching hi-end gas stove & microwave, dude at Lowe’s was former owner of a venerable mom&pop store that Lowe’s put out of business. I told him I never bought extended warranties, and he said, “well, not necessary on stove or microwave, but I strongly recommend getting one for the fridge.” I did, and it paid off. Not just the coils are crap. After ext warranty ran out, the back panel of mine rusted through from condensate due to lack of insulation behind the ice maker.

How much would you pay for a no frills fridge that would last 78 years?
