165 - Frank Howard Earned 165 Wins as Head Coach for Clemson

Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard had a folksy way of spinning tales that kept audiences on the edge of their seats. He also was the man led Clemson – fans, staff, and players – to believe that Clemson football could achieve anything.
As Sports Illustrated put it:
“If you were building a Mount Rushmore of football coaches at Clemson, Dabo Swinney and Danny Ford would most certainly be posing for portraits.
But the first face that would don that mountain would be Frank Howard. Even while Swinney and Ford have led the Tigers to national championships, the field on which they coach is named for Howard along with the emblem of football tradition, "Howard's Rock."
Howard started his Clemson career in 1931 as a line coach under Jess Neely. Neely left for Rice in 1940, and the story goes that Clemson Athletic Council Sam Rhodes nominated Howard to be the next coach. Howard, who was standing in the back of the room said "I second the nomination," and the Tigers had their new head coach.”

Howard had actually begun his time at Clemson right after completing his collegiate playing career at Bama. As ClemsonTigers.com put it:
Howard stepped onto the rolling hills of Clemson in 1931 fresh from the varsity football ranks at the University of Alabama where he was a first stringer on Wallace Wade’s 1930 team that drubbed Washington State, 24-0, in the 1931 Rose Bowl. Howard was known as the “Little Giant” of the Tide’s “Herd of Red Elephants.”
The bald veteran came to his first coaching post under Jess Neely as a line tutor. “At least that was my title,” Howard recalls.
“Actually, I also coached track, was ticket manager, recruited players and had charge of football equipment. In my spare time I cut grass, lined tennis courts and operated the canteen while the regular man was out to lunch.” Howard was not only track coach from 1931-39, but served as baseball coach in 1943 and his 12-3 record that year is still among the best percentages for a season in Clemson history.

After securing the HC job, Howard apparently got off to an unusual start. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
He signed a four-year contract, which he misplaced on a recruiting trip. It was the only contract he ever received in 30 years as head coach. Every year after the first contract ran out, he accepted a handshake offer from Clemson’s president to continue as head coach.

The Greenville News provides some additional background info on Coach Howard:
“Howard jump started Clemson’s connection to the state of Alabama as well as the Crimson Tide football program. Howard attended his home state school on an academic scholarship and graduated in 1931 after a career as a standout lineman for the Crimson Tide.
He was Clemson’s football coach for 30 seasons from 1940 to 1969 – the fifth-longest in NCAA history for a coach serving at one school. The Tigers compiled a 165-118-12 record under Howard’s watch despite playing only 38 percent of their games at home and he guided Clemson to six bowls, including a Gator Bowl win against Missouri in 1948 that capped a perfect 11-0 season.
Howard, who led Clemson to six ACC titles and two Southern Conference titles, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. He died in 1996 at the age of 86.”

One of the ClemsonTigers.com article cited above also notes that after Howard was hired, he only once sat in a hot seat, which occurred during WW 2. Of note, the article makes reference to Howard’s hometown of Barlowe Bend, Alabama:
Known as the “Bashful Baron of Barlow Bend,” Howard’s job was in jeopardy only once in 30 seasons. The war years were not great to Clemson, as many of his players had to go off to the war effort. Prior to the 1943 season, Clemson’s entire junior and senior classes were drafted (into the armed services, not the NFL), and Howard started an all-freshman lineup.
https://clemsontigers.com/125-years-of-clemson-football-frank-howard-seconds-his-own-nomination/
Overall, Frank Howard served as: - Clemson Football Head Coach 1940-1969 - Clemson Baseball Head Coach 1943 - Clemson Track and Field Head Coach 1931-1939 - Clemson Athletic Director 1940-1971
A Clemson Legend in every sense of the word!
The Greenville News article cited above also mentioned Howard’s roll in positioning Howard’s Rock into the storied tradition it is today:
“In the early-1960s, Clemson alumnus Sam Jones gifted Howard with a rock he’d brought home from Death Valley, California.
Howard kept the large chunk of quartzite in the office, using it as a door stop for years before growing tired of its presence and instructing Clemson booster Gene Willimon to get rid of the rock by throwing it “over a fence or into a ditch.”
Willimon had other plans. He had the rock placed on a pedestal at the top of the hill in the east end zone of Clemson’s stadium, which already was known as Death Valley. In the first game played in the presence of the rock – Sept 24, 1966 – Clemson rallied from an 18-point deficit to defeat Virginia 40-35, and the tradition of rubbing the rock before entering the field by running down the hill began in earnest prior to the first game of the 1967 season, a 23-6 win against Wake Forest.
After being vandalized in 2013, the rock has been encased in safety glass and is protected by a security system.
Today, the rubbing of Howard’s Rock is recognized as one of the most well-known traditions in college football.”
https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2023/10/07/howards-rock-tradition-clemson-football-frank-howard-death-valley/71086635007/
ClemsonTigers.com added to the story:
“At some point during the 1966 season, Howard referred to the Rock as Howard’s Rock. The tradition really took off the next season.
On the Friday before the 1967 home opener against Wake Forest, Howard told his players that if they touched the Rock before running down the Hill, they would receive supernatural powers.
Howard also told the Tigers, “If you give me 110-percent effort, you can touch the Rock, but if you don’t, keep your filthy hands off of my Rock.”

South Carolina Highway 165 is a 28.39 mile state highway which starts at the south end on Yonges Island and crosses US 17 in Ravenel on the way to it's north end at US 17 Alternate in Summerville.
Anderson University is a private Baptist university in Anderson, SC. It was founded in 1848 as Johnson Female Seminary (Johnson College soon after) by the South Carolina Baptist Convention, named for the school's first chancellor William Johnson. The school closed after Johnson's death and the onset of the Civil War. It reopened in 1911 as Anderson College. In 1931, Anderson College became a coeducational junior college and in the 1990s became a four-year institution. It became Anderson University in 2006. Anderson has about 4,000 students on 305 acres in over 100 areas of study. The athletic teams, the Trojans, compete in NCAA Division II in the South Atlantic Conference. Notable alumni include writer James Lee Barrett, author Sue Monk Kidd, and James Michael Tyler (Gunther on Friends).
