went to a really nice restaurant last night to grab a gift card for a business associate that did us a solid. went to bar area and sought out bartender - told her i needed $300 gift card. in less than 60 secs she hands me card and bill. as she is handing it to me she asks if i wanted a drink. i say no, just rolled into town after all day trip. as she is asking this she is holding pen over tip line pointing telling me sign right here and grab my copy. still holding receipt and card she asks is there anything else? i again say no thank you.
obviously she wanted tip for a 300 gift card. i won’t do all the maff, but 10% is $30 freakin dollars for 45 secs of work. gave her $10 and rolled out. was i wrong? are we supposed to tip at really really nice restaurants for gift cards? i am clueless as to protocol now.

Which includes grabbing a pastry out of the pastry case. Making a latte gets like a 10% tip from me.

...was thinking, 'no harm in suggesting it' if she was motioning toward the tip line.
But no, I wouldn't have tipped anything there, especially because the business buddy will end up tipping them when he uses the gift card.
... And there's only one time when it's appropriate to double dip the tip. heh-heh

I'm sure someone here will disagree, but I only tip wait staff and bar staff when they offer an actual service. I have a hard time tipping when I don't have table service, but I do it most of the time anyways, and then complain about it internally. If she was working as a hostess, they don't get the reduced hourly rates that make tipping necessary.
IF YOU ROLLED A BURRITO FOR ME AND ALREADY MAKE MINIMUM WAGE OR MORE, TIPPING WAS NOT DESIGNED FOR YOU.

and then they ask for tips. Especially if I have to fill my own tea/coke/coffee.
I'm a poor tipper unless I'm sitting at a table when it comes to food. I'm also a poor tipper if the service sucks.

I’m not tipping for that.
I don’t tip if I order standing up or in my car. Frankly, I’m about fed up with the out of control tipping culture in the US. I will tip for good service, I simply will not stand for subsidizing labor costs just for the sake of it. Preselected 20, 25, or 30 percent tips? For taking my order? Get right tf out with that.
Before anyone accuses me of whatever, I’ve waited tables. I’ve bartended. I’ve been a dockhand and got tips in that job. I won’t be shamed into voluntarily paying 1/4 to 1/3 more for everything just because. Raise prices and pay your staff what you think they should be paid.

I'm a pretty generous tipper for service. I was very generous for the COVID time period for delivery.
If you hand me a bag of food, my tip for you is to tell me thank you for the business. If you look at me wrong as I'm buying a gift card, I may just cancel the transaction and get it somewhere else.

I'm a big believer in being a generous tipper but that's over the line, IMO, for them to expect that on a gift card... especially since gratuity isn't included in that card when someone returns to spend it.
It's getting silly. I don't wanna tip the self-serve yogurt guys when I made everything, and I don't like that some places are already including 30 percent as an option when you close out.

You don't tip when effectively pre-paying for a meal/experience that you will be tipping for. No sir. Double dipping. Nope.

every year at Christmas.
When I come in to buy them, I also eat. However, when the manager sees me in December, he insists on ringing up the cards separately. I've never understood if this is collect a tip for himself or if it is to prevent the bar tender from strong arming a larger tip.

comp the meal if buying a certain number of cards. I am not sure what exactly that number is. The number is lower if I know 2 people cannot have a full meal for the value of said card.

fundraiser so they could have a drink on us. Well, when the waiter rang up my tab, he made sure to tell me to not tip on those, so I had to drunkenly math out the total. I think it was $270 before tip and I tipped $27 on top of it. Mentally I had to subtract the gift cards and hat that my wife bought so that was a $27 tip on about $125 in food/drinks.
Sober me felt good about that tip later.
