ACC vs SEC
Aug 30, 2013, 12:46 AM
|
|
With USC winning tonight, the SEC cheering and chanting has already begun. But part of me thinks this is nothing to crow about as they were favored by nearly 2 scores.
So, I did some research and came up with the following, which shows the ACC has very little shot of making a statement unless they do something they statistically have no chance of doing.
http://www.thetigerswag.com/2013/08/opening-weekend-why-acc-is-in-cant-win.html
It won't matter as the winning conference will continue to brag, but outside of our game vs GA, there shouldn't be much to brag about (VT has no business being on the same field as Bama)...

LSU was probably the 6th best team in the SEC last year.

the conference cheerleading thing is kind of lame anyway.
I could care less if other ACC schools lose to SEC teams.

VT use to carry the ACC along with FS AND MIAMI. Clemson lost to many games they should have won as we all know. Now, we are turning the corner and hopefully the other ACC teams will too. It is fun beating ranked teams. The only way to do that is if the ACC wins all of their ooc games too. Beating the spread doesn't count as a win. There are no moral victories For The ACC to get any respect, we need several or most teams to whip other great teams ooc. Winning earns respect!!!!! Clemson has to smoke our ooc schedule against the SEC teams that we play and win our ACC games for us to get respect. Clemson needs to schedule the big boys year in and year out. Think back to when FSU was not in the ACC, they played all the great teams. They were good too. Great players want to play the best. They want to be the best. I just asked the computer how many times Clemson has finished in the top ten over our history. In all the years of Clemson football, we have only been in the top 25 25 times. Only 25 times. Yes, we won a national championship. I would bet Coach Ford had 10 of those. Dabo 3. We expect greatness, but that is earned on the field. This weekend, we get to prove we belong there again. Hopefully we win em all. Beat the best! Go Tigers

The funny thing is, you know eSECpn would make this distinction if the ACC had to play Miss St, Mizzu, and Ark. If we were favored to win all 3, you wouldn't hear,"this is a chance for the ACC to make a name for itself." You would hear,"Lets see if these bad SEC teams can still beat these ACC teams just because the conference is better."

That is true, but I am saying we need to try and play their best to be the best. You always know where a program is by playing the best. Look at B St. They try and play the best. Sure, some of the best will turn you down, if they think you are good or if they might not can beat ya. Just saying.

Exactly - the ACC is being held to a pretty high standard this weekend; one which is fairly unattainable.
And I agree that if the tables were turned and the ACC played two teams they were highly favored in, then it would be treated differently - and probably given the dreaded asterisk.
All that said, Clemson needs to take care of their business as that is all they can control.

be expected to win, but is that really a good excuse? Why aren't these teams better?
VT was the best program in the ACC for 8 years and now they don't belong on the same field as the SECs best team. UNC essentially won the coastal division last year and were maybe the 3rd best team in the league yet they were a 2 TD underdog against the 5th best SEC team.
Why?

If we were matched up against Tenn, Awbarn, Miss St, Vandy, Ole Miss, Mizzu, Ky, or Ark and we waxed them, NO ONE would say, look out, the ACC is taking over the sec. Thats the only point I am making. As a program, we want to play the best; as a conference, its not an apples to apples match-up.

I would agree that all Clemson can do is win the games they play; however, the bigger issue the ACC could once again be relegated to a lower level. Not because they deserve so, but because they performed to expectations.
If the ACC were favored in all three games and still lost, then it's a valid argument. But putting our fortunes on the backs of one team as a 2 TD underdog and another as a 3 TD underdog doesn't sit well.

through the conference. I pull for my team, and I've never really gotten into this whole "our conference" vs. "your conference" stuff.
I understand why it matters, but I think most fans of most teams really just care about their own team.

A lot of this conference thing started with the ACC basketball talking up the ACC then the Big East took that crown. The SEC has always been THE big dog in college football. I am 66 years old and don't ever remember them not being better than the ACC or most everyone else for that matter. Frank Howard dreamed of beating Bama and Auburn and he had the better team on occasion, but that seldom produced a win.

The SEC always has been and always will be better than the ACC. There maybe some years where the ACC looks comparable, but very rarely. I looked back and the year 2002 comes to mind.
In 2002:
NC State went 11-3 and beat Notre Dame 28-6 in a bowl game. Maryland went 11-3 and beat Tennessee 30-3 in a bowl game. Virginia went 9-5 and beat West Virginia 48-22 in a bowl game. Florida State beat Florida 31-14. Clemson beat scar 27-20. This was all before expansion and the ACC made a good representation out of conference minus a couple of hiccups that year. Ironically, it was the three southern football schools ( Clemson, GT, and FSU ) who lost their bowl games in 2002. But that is my point, a strong conference has teams that pick up the slack when their traditional powers are struggling, and 2002 is a perfect example.
Things like this rarely ever happen in the ACC. The ACC just does not have the fan support or the tradition of the SEC. Teams like UVA and NC State put together teams that can compete with good out of conference teams a couple of times every 20 years or so. It takes a Phillip Rivers or someone to come along to make them good for a couple of years and then they are back to normal. It is what it is.

The ACC as a whole has neither the financial commitment not the backing from administration that the SEC has for its football programs.
