Academic Common Market

Jun 11, 2014, 7:50 AM

Can someone explain the Academic Common Market? How is Clemson currently at a disadvantage and what are we going to do to "even the playing field"? Thanks.

my understanding is it allows out of state students wavers on out of state tuition. lots of programs have been using it. we have only used it for grad students. that will change i understand along with maybe getting jucos in a lot easier.

It's basically....

a scholarship program/tuition savings program for college students from selected states in the Southern Regional Education Board and effectively enables coaches to stretch scholarship dollars further.

I will try to explain the Academic Common Market as best I can.....

Clemson will offer out-of-state students from certain states a tuition waiver to pay in-state tuition IF they enroll in one of 12 programs that Clemson offers and IF a school from their home state does NOT offer that particular program. There is also a cap on the number of students that can enroll via Academic Common Market.

I hope that makes sense. Many of the details of the program aren't yet known, but we will pass along more information as we get it.

Most of our southern competitors (SCU for one).....

are participants in the Academic Common Market. When we were recruiting a player from say, GA or NC, SCU might offer them a 1/2 scholarship (in-state tuition) and we might offer them a 1/2 scholarship (out-of-state tuition). In this case the players family would have to shell out over $10,000 more a year to come to Clemson.
All this is in play because of the 11.7 scholarship limit on baseball - which is pure BS. Since football is fully funded, the ACM does not factor in.
Because President Clements and AD Radakovich saw this huge disadvantage for our olympic sports, they acted to become a participant in the ACA. Our former president and AD elected to only allow it for grad students.
