About TL's "Slow" Release
Dec 24, 2018, 12:09 PM

"Trevor Lawrence leads a Clemson offense that’s sixth-best on passing downs and 15th in explosiveness. In overall efficiency, the Tigers are led by the running game (8th in S&P+) but hold a respectable 27th ranking in passing S&P+. Part of that efficiency is Lawrence being sacked only 2.5 percent of his snaps, and according to Pro Football Focus, he holds the second-fastest average time to throw among Power 5 conference (2.19)."

Never heard anyone say anything about TL having a slow release. He may have held onto the ball too long on 3 or 4 plays early in the year, but at this point he is incredibly quick at going through his progressions and getting the ball out once he finds an open receiver.

Brian Greise said it . He worked one of our games and mentioned that TL would need to speed up his release and horten his throwing motion to make it in the NFL ... or something as nonsensical as such .

I missed that comment. Granted I’m not expert talent evaluator but his release looks quick and very fluid to me.
The only knock on him is that he holds the ball a little long but this has greatly improved the more he has played.

Keep in mind he has been sacked very few times, also, as the article mentions.

Trevor’s motion gets a little longer if he isn’t focused or is a little fatigued. Most of the time it’s pretty tight and lightning quick. Brian pointed out some warm up throws where Trevor was talking over his shoulder while he threw with a Tebow motion. It was ridiculous to insinuate that TL had a slow release from that observation.

From what I remember, Greise was being sarcastic about how long it took him to get the ball out.

A guy who throws the ball faster than the speed limit on 385 and this idiot says he doesn’t get the ball out quick enough. He and that other joker are THE WORST PBP/color guy combo on E$ECPN.

I'm not trying to single anyone out but there was a thread where a few agreed with Greise saying he had an extra motion to his throw. I disputed it then and wanted to point out the facts about his quick release when I saw this.

This stat has more to do with the fact that we throw a lot of quick screens and outs than anything else.

His was talking about bringing the ball below his shoulder and looping it around. TL does this very quickly which is okay at the college level. He said it would need to be corrected at the NFL level.

Release time is measured from when the lead hand comes off the ball until the ball is released by the throwing hand. If TL has any untoward motion he must do it dang fast to have the second fastest release in big time college football.

That it wasn't unusual to see such a 'flaw', but nothing TL would have a problem overcoming. He wasn't really being critical with his observations...simply commenting.

Was a tiger. It is a wasted motion that if he could get rid of would put his release time ridiculously fast. And it would eliminate a potential strip time for a lineman. The issue would be if it messes up his mechanics. It night be something you just live with... he will do fine in the NFL with it. It would just be better if he didn't have it.

As far as the screen passes improving his release time, I would think that's the opposite. You have to take something off passes close up with a slower throwing motion. You can't snap those off.
