A Wine Drinking Dog

May 2, 2021, 3:45 PM

Back in the 1970's and 80's, I made some good wine. I was living in my former home which had a basement, just the thing for making wine. Every year I got my federal license for making wine. The most wine I made in one year year was 90 gallons. Some of my friends helped me with the crushing and bottling phases. Friends saved their champagne bottles for me and I got empty champagne boxes from the liquor stores. The only thing I had to purchase was the plastic caps and wire covers.

The grapes in this area do not have a high sugar content so I had to add sugar, just enough so that when the wine stopped working the alcohol content was about 11%. When I bottled the wine I left enough space in the bottle so I could add sugar water. This made it possible for the wine to work in the bottle, raising the alcohol content to about 12% and making a "bubbly" wine.

Bottling the wine was a busy time. Some of my friends would help with this task. We had a Dachshund who was always around during the bottling task. He would lick up any wine that we spilled and sometimes there was a lot of spillage. One year when we had finished the bottling task, we started up the stairs. At the lower end of the stairs, there was a flat area three steps above the basement floor and then the remaining steps to the first floor. "Champ", the Dachshund, finally made it up the first three steps but realized the remaining steps were just too much for a wine filled dog. He looked at one of my daughters with that "can you carry me up these steps" look. She picked him up and carried him up the steps. She put him in a beanbag, one of his favorite places, and in no time he was asleep.

When we moved to the Downs in 2010, my daughter discovered a box of wine from 1978. I sampled one of the bottles. It had not yet turned to vinegar. It was not bad but not good enough for a second helping.

Bet you had a lot of "friends" visiting after the process was complete.

Someone sent me the video of the cat and that reminded me of the episode with our dog.

Re: A Wine Drinking Dog - not to be a party pooper

but alcohol is very dangerous to cats and dogs. They
can easily get alcohol poisoning and/or vomiting,
trouble breathing, and other problems up to death.
Of course too much alcohol isn't healthy for humans
either, moderation being the key, something we
struggle with on any good thing - wine, women, w/e...
