That’s going to be the downside for a lot of these kids. They are blowing a chance to play ball and get a good education. It could help this thing settle out eventually as kids get burned.

He can take his name out of the portal at anytime. Some kids put in just to test the waters. Like when a coach gets fired. Only to stay with the new coach. This is what's happening at OU.
But if they are not a good player and get no offer. It's juco or walk on.

Have wondered same thing. Tough lesson coming for a bunch of kids who received bad counsel. I would think at least some will be completely left out, a few will play D1 somewhere, and most will be at a much lower school athletically and academically.

Would be nice to see some testimonials come out from players who transferred and ended up regretting the decision. Some real feedback painting a more accurate picture of the supposed greener pastures might save some future regret for some of these kids. I do think (maybe a bit of wishful thinking) we are seeing the peak of the chaos now though. A combination of more examples to point to that didn’t work out and evolution in recruiting strategy will hopefully mitigate most of the current strife it is causing.

13,000 student-athletes have entered the portal since 2019 and 11,000 remain there today. if thye do'nt get chosen, they don't play college sports.

Correct. They are basically "out on the street." I'm no sure the number is 13k, seems high. Might be closer to 1,300 in D1 football?

You are correct - it’s high just for football. If you say 85 players per team times 130 teams you only get 11,050 total scholarship football players so that number is all sports.

Community college.
I'm wondering what happens to a player who enters the portal mid-season. I assume they're allowed to finish the semester scott free, with meal plan, housing, access to tutors, etc. Seems to me like they should either have to pay a prorated reimbursement to the university for the rest of the semester or be forced to withdraw.

Many players lose out big time by entering the portal
Dec 3, 2021, 7:19 PM

It's documented and a lot of articles have been written already. A surprising number from FBS schools either go down a level to FCS or they fall out of football and end up taking warehouse jobs or something like that.
It often ends up being a giant mistake but it's their decision. A 4-year scholarship at an FBS school is nothing to sneeze at.

Hopefully as more DATA is available!

As more data is available to these kids as to the success rate of "portal players" there are fewer and fewer! Crazy part is, unlike many rules that are not "for the kid" this one though seemingly a good thing for the kid - by the numbers so far is anything but good for the kid! What are we teaching them about following through on a commitment?
As a Marine - I can't fathom not following through on my commitment to my fellow Marines! Once I vowed to serve and give my all: "that's it, that is what you do"!
I can almost imagine one of these transfer portal kids going to a Drill Instructor and telling them they want to "enter the portal"! LOL! W/O going into detail - "it wouldn't end well for them"! LOL!
