Stocks vs Bonds

3

Dec 12, 2024, 9:13 AM

Does your advisor keep recommending to buy bonds to diversify? I'm around a 80/20 mix, but due to stock market gains, every new dollar seems to be buying bonds to keep the 80/20 ratio.

I'm enjoying the market increase, but tired of buying bonds for the past year.

I'm considering changing my philosophy to instead have 5 years of expenses in bonds, then dump the rest into equity. Not worrying about the 80/20 ratio as long as I have 5 years of expenses in bonds (and maybe cash).

Age = almost 50

gotta get in on the BTC train.

honestly macro equity ETFs are just as risk averse these days as bonds. JEPI is a good Juan by Jamie over a JPM that pays dividends. They got a book they write covered calls on so they use that profits to cut dividends if you're looking for a more cash-flow focused fund.

I converted my "e-fund" to that like 4 or 5 years ago. Any emergency that pops up, I can just throw on my Amex and shuffle some money around to get to it in time to pay it off.

All of this is a moot point since you have an advisor...my argument to my guy, is I'm paying you to monitor risk so monitor risk. Don't give me this 90s level low Beta ########. Granted, I'm almost* a couple decades younger than you so I'm riskfuckingon

I did a fairly major re-allocation following the election. of my liquid funds, ~60% is with a pro. Of that, 33% is in BTC exposure ETFs. Then I have 30% in BTC coins and the last 10% is just my eff around fund to trade around and sling derivatives at memes like a true degenerate.

I completely got out of bonds, haha

Edit to Add: If we're being honest, I do think we're bout to experience a pretty massive rug pull. so you gotta watch it, but that's what you pay the pro for. Obviously betting on market stabilization a bullish long term, but that comes with a significant pull back due to the fuckery that's been happening the last dozen or so quarters. This is hedged, IMO, by BTC. We'll see.

*misread OP. you need to get more agressive if you ain't even 50 bruh

My 'advisor' is Vanguard

So the 'advice' is pretty basic. Vanguard gave me cheap enough price to get things balanced. I'm not ready to pay somebody 1% of my AUM.

I'm 72% Stocks, 18% Bonds, 7% Cash, 3% BTC

Where do you see BTC going in the next year? Been building up cash in past few months.

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How does that work?

Do you talk to a person, or they just have pre-determined allocation strategies based on age profile / questionnaire / etc.? Basically just automated?

Idk man, I like being able to text my guy random ish I'm seeing in the tape. I was fortunate enough to find a younger dude who went out on his own and I've referred a bunch of my buddies over to him. Helped me upgrade some algos / scanners, reviewed biz case evaluations for some target acquisitions I've been working through, helped me with exit strategies on some of the trades I'll make... good guy to talk to on some of the trends and how to trade them (i.e. made good money on the nuclear stocks. I think I posted about it in P&R, but can't remember). stuff like that. Also comes in town a couple times a year and buys me a steak and a beer ha.

He's picked up some older clients, so therefore changed his strategy to more structured notes, minimizing beta ####. So that kind of sucks, but it comes with the territory of growing a bigger book.

Up :)

I chat with him 2-4x per year, but largely feels like they follow a ######. Vanguard pushes for diversification between US/World equities, and really want a heavier bond weight than I prefer (they are pushing 65/35).

The fee % is pretty small so I found value initially when we set everything up. Nowadays not feeling the value and thinking about dropping it (as I can maintain 5-8 fund portfolio myself).

Been watching vides from some Root Financial folks online and considering paying more fees for year to somebody new just to shake things up.

What % does your guy charge?

1%

And he told me something last meeting that rang true, b/c I asked him to get more aggressive.

He said you don't pay me to get aggressive, you pay me to not lose you money and hit minimum returns YoY. If you wanna get aggressive, do that on your own.

Besides me mandating the 33% BTC exposure to 3 of my accts w/ him, I took that to heart.

Good FAs make their money when the market is up and earn their money when the market is down.
